Liverpool wasting no time: Ready to strike deal for star after just six months

Liverpool have another new signing in their sights and they’ve wasted no time to get him on the shortlist. Things could move quickly from here.

There's no question that Liverpool need a centre-back. There's no way around it at this stage with their defensive problems ramping up dramatically in 2027.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez will both be out of contract next summer. That's a dramatic issue for Liverpool, who have had Van Dijk marshalling their defence since 2018. Moving on from him would be an enormous change.

Especially as Gomez would also leave. Throw in Ronald Araujo being on loan and Liverpool don't actually have a centre-back older than 21 contracted beyond this season.

The only remaining options would be Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, after all, and the latter hasn't played in a year. That has Liverpool looking at new players to sign next year - and they appear to have found another one.

Liverpool looking at Tarik Muharemovic

Teamtalk reports that Liverpool want to sign Tarik Muharemovic. It’s a classic signing in many ways - a player who looked good last season but wasn’t quite a ‘sure thing’.

That allowed Leeds United to swoop in and sign him without major competition. Muharemovic has since shown he can do it in the Premier League, which naturally now has all the top clubs convinced they should sign him.

Leeds aren’t eager to sell whatsoever, though. They’ve got the player contracted until 2031 and will want at least a season out of him. We imagine far more than that.

Thus this will take a lot of money to get done. We do imagine Liverpool would prefer to sign any sort of Van Dijk replacement from the Premier League if they can, just to get some level of guarantee about their performance.

A brilliant year from Muharemovic could easily convince them to go all-in, then. In fact, we’re not sure on any other senior options for the Reds as Luka Vuskovic, also linked, hasn’t even turned 20.

So we think the Leeds star is really want to watch. Ultimately, he could be taking on the biggest job in football - Van Dijk’s replacement.
