Mark Schofield is a former college quarterback and attorney covering the NFL and F1.
They are trading completions in South Beach between the visiting Detroit Lions and the Miami Dolphins.
And that is not limited to quarterbacks Jared Goff and Malik Willis.
Both teams have now pulled off successful fake punts in this game, with punters Jack Fox and Bradley Pinion getting in on the passing game fun.
Detroit was first to call for a fake punt, early in the second quarter. With the Lions facing a 4th-and-7 on their own 19-yard line, Dan Campbell rolled the dice. But Fox delivered a strike, throwing a near-perfect hitch route to Tay Martin along the left side of the field:
With this timing and anticipation, one almost wonders if Fox once played quarterback.
He did, throwing 18 touchdowns as a quarterback at Ladue Horton Watkins high school in Ladue, Missouri. Thanks to Ian Rapoport for dusting off that statistic.
Not to be outdone, the Dolphins dialed up a creative fake punt of their own in the second half. With Miami facing a 4th-and-3 near midfield early in the fourth quarter, Jeff Hafley rolled the dice himself, with Pinion finding a wide-open Kaytron Allen for the first down. Take note of this design, as Allen comes underneath the line and releases through the middle of the formation, making this an easy throw for the punter:
Only one of these fakes resulted in points, however. The Lions were forced to punt a few plays later after their fake, while the Dolphins turned their extended possession into a field goal.
