Fabregas stays grounded, says Como have more work to do after nine-goal rout

Cesc Fabregas chose to remain grounded and pointed out that Como have more work to do to reach the knockout rounds of the Champions League, after they put nine goals past Lens.

On Wednesday, Como recorded the joint-biggest win in Champions League history with their staggering 9-1 success at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

The only previous eight-goal victories in the competition were Liverpool's 8-0 win over Besiktas in 2007 and Real Madrid's 8-0 triumph against Malmo in 2015.

Como also became just the second team to score nine goals in a Champions League match, after Bayern Munich beat Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in 2024, while they are the first Italian side to score nine in a major European competition since Roma beat Altay SK 10-1 in 1962.

Como's 19 goals in their first four major European games are the joint-most by any club, matching QPR's tally when they made their continental bow in 1976, and after taking nine points from those matches, they sit fourth in the league-phase standings.

However, Fabregas urged his players not to get carried away, particularly with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona among their future opponents in Europe and a trip to San Siro to face Inter coming up this weekend, in Serie A.

"It is also our fourth ever Champions League game, so four is the key number here," Fabregas told Sky Sport Italia.

"I'm happy – everything went our way. The lads did well; now we have to prepare for a very important match on Sunday, the ninth one between the international breaks.

"When I saw the last two games were PSG and Barcelona, I thought we needed to get as many points as possible in the early fixtures.

"Nothing is impossible, but these are two teams who are superior to the rest.

"There is a long way to go. Those games are in the last two weeks of January, so all I am focused on is recovering the injured players, because we are missing so many, in attack especially."

The previous record for most goals scored by a team in their first four Champions League fixtures was set by Juventus in 1995-96, with 14, a mark Como have shattered.

No French team had previously lost a home European game by more than five goals, and Lens boss Yannick Cahuzac pulled no punches in his post-match interview with UEFA.com.

"It's a heavy scoreline; we were completely dominated. We've got to have a long, hard look at ourselves and attempt to regain some pride against Marseille on Sunday," he said.

"I can't offer you an in-depth analysis of what went wrong. We're hurting, but I'm going to concentrate on my players and how we can pick them up from this."
