Manchester City supporters have delivered mixed reactions after Erling Haaland scored a late winner to secure a dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig. Although the three points were welcome, many Cityzens were far from impressed with the team’s overall performance, with Gianluigi Donnarumma’s display and the defensive problems attracting particular criticism.
City twice surrendered their advantage as Leipzig threatened to turn the game around. However, Haaland eventually made the difference, finding the net in the 78th minute to secure a crucial away victory for Enzo Maresca’s side.
Following the final whistle, Manchester City fans took to X to express their feelings. While some celebrated another important European victory, others questioned the team’s performances and raised concerns about several players.
The reactions revealed a growing sense of frustration among sections of the fanbase, despite City’s ability to find a winning goal when it mattered most.
Manchester City travelled to Germany knowing that a positive Champions League result was important following disappointing Premier League defeats against Aston Villa and Brighton.
However, the visitors struggled to establish complete control during the opening stages.
Leipzig started brightly and created several opportunities. Antonio Nusa, in particular, caused problems for the City defence with his movement and attacking quality.
City eventually took the lead in the 37th minute through an unfortunate own goal from Castello Lukeba. Nico O’Reilly delivered the ball across the penalty area, but the Leipzig defender inadvertently turned it into his own net.
The hosts responded immediately after the break.
Ridle Baku levelled the score in the 49th minute with a low delivery that caught Donnarumma off his line and found the bottom corner.
City restored their advantage through Enzo Fernández, who finished brilliantly after receiving an excellent pass from Iliman Ndiaye.
However, Leipzig refused to surrender. Nusa produced another impressive moment, beating Donnarumma to make it 2-2.
Just when another frustrating European evening appeared possible, Haaland stepped forward.
Elliot Anderson drove forward down the right before delivering a dangerous ball across the penalty area. Haaland slid in to convert from close range, restoring City’s lead in the 78th minute.
Despite late pressure from the German side, Manchester City held on to claim all three points.
It was an important result, but the performance left plenty of questions for Maresca to address.
Unsurprisingly, Haaland received plenty of appreciation from supporters following his decisive contribution.
The Norwegian has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to influence important matches, even when Manchester City are not performing at their best.
One supporter, Jake, expressed his relief by writing:
“Haaland has rescued us once again.”
The comment captured a feeling shared by several Cityzens. When the team struggles to produce convincing football, having a striker capable of delivering decisive moments remains an enormous advantage.
Another supporter highlighted the importance of the result, simply writing:
“Result thankfully.”
It was a short reaction, but it reflected the relief surrounding the final whistle.
For some supporters, the quality of the performance was secondary to securing three valuable Champions League points.
Another fan celebrated the victory with the familiar message:
“This is City.”
The reaction suggested that, regardless of the difficulties, supporters still recognised the importance of finding a way to win in Europe.
However, not everyone was prepared to overlook the problems.
One of the biggest talking points among Manchester City supporters was Gianluigi Donnarumma’s performance.
The Italian goalkeeper has faced criticism following several recent matches, and the Leipzig encounter added further fuel to the debate.
His positioning during Baku’s equaliser attracted particular attention.
Supporter Azi explained the growing concern surrounding the goalkeeper, mentioning previous performances against PSG, Aston Villa, Brighton and Leipzig.
The fan wrote:
“I’m really struggling to enjoy this win given Donnarumma’s poor form. PSG, Villa, Brighton, and now Leipzig.”
Azi also suggested that some previous mistakes had gone unnoticed because City managed to win those matches.
It was a particularly revealing reaction because it demonstrated that some supporters are no longer judging Donnarumma solely on the latest result.
Another supporter, King, was equally unimpressed, writing:
“We take the win but Donnarumma is shocking.”
These comments suggest that confidence in the goalkeeper is becoming a concern among sections of the fanbase.
Donnarumma remains an experienced goalkeeper with considerable ability. Nevertheless, Manchester City cannot afford repeated mistakes, particularly when facing Europe’s strongest attacking teams.
Maresca will need to assess the situation carefully as the Champions League campaign progresses.
While Donnarumma attracted criticism, Elliot Anderson emerged as one of the biggest positives from the discussion.
The midfielder received considerable appreciation for his performance, with several supporters suggesting that he has become increasingly important to the team.
His contribution to Haaland’s winning goal was particularly significant.
Anderson showed excellent energy and determination before driving down the right and delivering the ball that allowed the Norwegian striker to score.
One supporter, ManCity2011, suggested that Anderson represents half of the team.
Another fan, using the name Anderson, described the midfielder as carrying the club almost single-handedly.
Meanwhile, Diego was even more direct:
“Anderson MOTM.”
The praise highlights how highly some supporters rate the midfielder’s influence.
Anderson’s ability to contribute defensively, progress the ball and create attacking opportunities makes him an important option for Maresca.
However, the repeated suggestions that one midfielder is carrying the team should also concern the coaching staff.
Manchester City need more consistent contributions across the entire squad.
Relying too heavily on individual performances is unlikely to be sustainable against the strongest opponents in Europe.
Perhaps the most significant theme emerging from the reactions was the growing frustration with Manchester City’s overall style of football.
Although the team secured the victory, several supporters questioned whether the current performances are good enough to compete for the Champions League.
One fan, Inconspicuous, expressed serious doubts about City’s European ambitions, writing:
“This is not a team that wins the CL.”
Another supporter described the performance as disgraceful, while Mike Masemula complained that the team had become difficult to watch.
Sakuta also expressed disappointment, describing the football as unpleasant to watch while hoping that improvements would arrive in the coming matches.
These reactions suggest that some supporters are becoming increasingly impatient.
For a club accustomed to controlling matches through possession, movement and attacking combinations, the recent performances have not always delivered the expected quality.
More importantly, the Leipzig encounter highlighted familiar problems.
City struggled to control periods of the game, allowed their opponents to create dangerous opportunities and twice surrendered their advantage.
Although the result was positive, the overall display was far from convincing.
Maresca now faces the challenge of restoring consistency and ensuring that Manchester City become more comfortable controlling difficult matches.
The criticism was not limited to individual players.
Some supporters also questioned Maresca’s tactical decisions and his approach to team selection.
James raised concerns about the direction of the team, suggesting that his confidence in the manager was decreasing as the season progressed.
Another supporter, Saahil, questioned the continued use of players in unfamiliar positions.
His reaction was particularly direct:
“Let’s keep playing everyone out of position.”
This reflects a wider concern about whether the current tactical approach is allowing Manchester City’s players to perform at their natural positions.
There was also criticism directed towards Rayan Cherki.
One supporter questioned the Frenchman’s contribution, describing him as a talented player who was not delivering enough for the team.
Another fan expressed frustration with what they considered a lack of attacking quality during much of the match.
These comments underline the difficult balance Maresca must find.
Manchester City possess considerable individual talent, but supporters want to see that quality translated into a more convincing collective performance.
The manager will also need to ensure that his tactical decisions bring the best out of the available players.
Despite the criticism, Manchester City’s victory over RB Leipzig should not be underestimated.
Winning away from home in the Champions League is never straightforward, especially against an opponent capable of creating problems throughout the match.
City showed attacking determination and eventually found the decisive goal through their most reliable goalscorer.
Haaland deserves considerable credit for his contribution, while Anderson’s involvement in the winning goal provided another encouraging moment.
Enzo Fernández also demonstrated his attacking quality with an important finish.
However, the defensive weaknesses and inconsistent performance remain significant concerns.
The reactions on X demonstrated that many Manchester City supporters are happy with the three points but unwilling to ignore the problems behind the result.
Donnarumma faces renewed scrutiny, Anderson continues to earn admiration, and Maresca must find answers to questions about his tactics and the team’s overall identity.
For now, City have secured an important Champions League victory.
But if they want to challenge Europe’s elite again, they will need to produce much more convincing performances.
Winning is important, but convincing the supporters that this team can compete for the biggest trophies is another challenge entirely.
