Nigeria’s U15 team, the Future Eagles, played out a 2-2 draw against Jordan in their second match at the FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Sunday morning.
Coach Patrick Bassey’s side showed considerable attacking intent but struggled to maintain defensive solidity, conceding twice against their Asian opponents to settle for another draw in the tournament.
The result followed Nigeria’s 3-3 draw against South Sudan in their opening fixture on Saturday at the Hovsan Competition Complex in Baku, leaving the team still searching for their first victory in the competition.
The Future Eagles, who arrived in Baku last Thursday with a 14-man squad, will be disappointed not to have converted their attacking promise into a win after scoring five goals across their opening two matches.
Despite their encouraging performances going forward, defensive lapses remain a concern for Bassey, who will be keen to address the team’s shortcomings at the back while preserving their attacking threat.
The Future Eagles are also scheduled to face Cyprus and Pakistan in a double fixture on Monday as they continue their campaign in the group stage.
Nigeria were drawn in Group A alongside South Sudan, Jordan, The Gambia, Cyprus and Pakistan, with five group-stage matches scheduled for each participating team.
Having recorded two consecutive draws, Bassey’s team will be eager to build on their attacking performances and turn their promising displays into victories as they continue their development at the international youth tournament.
