Kelechi Iheanacho scored in his 11th consecutive league game on Monday night, heading in Bursaspor's second goal in a 2-0 win over Pendikspor at the Matlı Stadium. The 62nd-minute header extends a run that had already made him the first player in Turkish professional league football to score in ten straight matches.

Halil Akbunar had put the hosts ahead after ten minutes.

The second goal came from pressure. Bursaspor won the ball as Pendikspor tried to play out from the back, strung together quick one-touch passes and found Iheanacho unmarked inside the box, where he headed in the cross, according to both Complete Sports and Bold Sports.

A record that keeps growing

Four days earlier, his brace in the 3-0 win over Muğlaspor took him past a mark that had stood since the 1960s. Metin Oktay scored in nine successive Süper Lig matches for Galatasaray in 1962-63. Saffet Sancaklı matched that with Kocaelispor in 1995-96, as Ajansspor recalled.

Ten was new territory. Eleven moves the bar further away.

The numbers are striking. Iheanacho now has 15 league goals, which is 15 of the 22 Bursaspor have scored this season according to the Ankara daily 24 Saat, and he sits six clear of Kayserispor's Taulant Seferi and Sivasspor's Rey Manaj at the top of the scorers' list.

His coach had set the target before kick-off. “It's a very difficult record to break. Our wish is for him to extend this streak even further,” Mustafa Er said, as quoted by the Bursaspor fan outlet Bursasporx. He shared the credit too: “The contributions of his teammates cannot be ignored.”

What it means for Nigeria

Iheanacho left Celtic for Bursaspor in July, dropping into the Turkish second tier.

Three months on, the Super Eagles forward is scoring every week. The real question for Nigeria is whether goals at this level carry enough weight when the forward line is picked, and one header against a side sitting 17th in the table will not settle that debate on its own, though eleven matches in a row is no lucky fortnight either.

The club needs it too.

Bursaspor are in a genuine promotion fight. The win lifts them to 25 points, second behind Kayserispor on 26, and the top two go up automatically. Next up is a trip to Ankara Keçiörengücü on Sunday 25 October. Twelve is the target, and our Nigerians abroad stats tracker will log the result.

Our view: the streak is the headline, but the share of the goals matters more. A striker scoring two thirds of a promotion contender's goals is carrying a club. That is exactly the kind of load the Super Eagles have struggled to hand to anyone up front.
