Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, Baraladei Daniel Igali, has arrived in Astana, Kazakhstan, for a series of high-level engagements ahead of the 2026 World Wrestling Championships.
Igali, who is a Bureau member of United World Wrestling, will take part in two Bureau meetings and the organisation’s Elective Congress, which is scheduled for Friday, October 23. The meetings are expected to address governance, administration, development and the future direction of international wrestling, with decisions that could shape the growth and competitiveness of the sport globally.
As a member of the Technical Commission, the former Olympic champion is expected to contribute to deliberations on Olympic qualification pathways, competition regulations and policies aimed at ensuring fairness and equal opportunities for wrestling nations across the world.
Igali has consistently advocated equitable representation and resource distribution in international sports, particularly for developing countries. He believes that limited funding and inadequate infrastructure should not stop African nations and other less-endowed countries from competing effectively at the highest level.
At the Elective Congress, he will also push for institutional stability, continuity of purpose and sustainable development programmes to strengthen wrestling administration and promote the long-term growth of the sport.
Beyond his international duties, the commissioner regards the trip as an opportunity to acquire knowledge and experience in technical administration, athlete development, competition management and global best practices in sports governance.

The experience is also expected to support Bayelsa State’s preparations for hosting the 2028 National Sports Festival, as the state government continues to invest in sporting infrastructure.
Igali thanked Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for his continued support and understanding of the importance of such international engagements, noting that they can improve sports administration and development in the state.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that his responsibilities within the global governing body translate into meaningful benefits for Bayelsa and Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Team Nigeria will be seeking to end a three-year medal drought at the World Wrestling Championships, as the country’s wrestlers hope to return to the global podium.
