NSC Backs Legends Football Game as Ex-Super Eagles Stars Prepare to Face African Icons in Lagos

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has thrown its weight behind the Legends Football Game, an exhibition match that will bring together former Super Eagles stars and some of Africa’s celebrated football greats in Lagos on November 8, 2026, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The encounter is scheduled to take place at Onikan Stadium, with 15 former Nigerian internationals from the celebrated 1994 and 1996 squads set to face 13 African legends in a gathering aimed at celebrating the continent’s football heritage.

NSC Director General Bukola Olopade welcomed the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to recognise the former players whose performances helped raise Nigeria’s profile in international football and inspired generations of young athletes.

He said the Commission was pleased to support an event that honours the achievements of these football icons while allowing younger fans to appreciate their contributions to the game.

“We cannot celebrate our football legends enough. The global recognition and positive image they brought to our country through their achievements cannot be quantified. They inspired generations of young Nigerians and continue to serve as role models for aspiring footballers,” Olopade said.

The NSC chief also praised the organisers for creating a platform to acknowledge the lasting influence of Nigeria’s football ambassadors. He encouraged supporters in Lagos and other parts of the country to attend the match and celebrate the players who provided some of Nigerian football’s most memorable moments.

“I want to urge football fans in Lagos and across the country to come out in their numbers and be part of this historic occasion. It is an opportunity to honour our legends and see them back on the pitch after so many memorable years,” he said.

“These are players who gave us unforgettable moments, inspired national pride and showed the world the quality and talent of Nigerian football. They deserve to be celebrated,” he added.

Toptier Sports Management is organising the event in collaboration with Afreximbank and CANEX. The initiative was officially unveiled in Lagos on September 9, 2026.

According to the NSC, its support for the exhibition aligns with efforts to preserve Nigeria’s sporting heritage, recognise the achievements of accomplished athletes and inspire the next generation through their stories and accomplishments.

Beyond the match itself, the gathering is expected to reunite fans with players who helped shape Nigeria’s football history and contributed to the country’s success on African and international stages.
