Why isn't Florian Wirtz starting for Liverpool vs. Fenerbahçe today?

Liverpool's starting lineup at Fenerbahçe contained at least one surprise, as playmaker Florian Wirtz started on the bench.

The German was not in the lineup for the Champions League match in Istanbul on Wednesday, Nov. 4, taking his place among the subs for only the second time all season.

Wirtz has made 13 appearances for Liverpool so far this season, starting 11 of those matches. He has totaled one goal and four assists in those games.

Fellow regulars Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo joined Wirtz on the bench, with the match coming just three days after a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League.

Liverpool coach Andoni Iraola went with an attacking trio of Bradley Barcola, Víctor Muñoz and Rio Ngumoha.

Iraola has rotated his side in previous Champions League matches this season, with Liverpool still winning all three of its first fixtures in the competition.

This story will be updated.
