Full credit to whoever was curating the soundtrack following yet another gripping day at Anfield.

As jubilant home fans filtered out into the cold night air, having witnessed their side edge closer to a Wembley return, the unmistakable sounds of 'Ain't Nobody' reverberated throughout the ground. The track, naturally, has long since been adopted by Liverpool supporters as an ode to Joe Gomez, the squad's longest-serving member, whose time at the club has spanned the tenures of Brendan Rodgers, Jurgen Klopp, Arne Slot, and now Andoni Iraola.

Gomez's inability to get his name on the scoresheet throughout that tenure has taken on near-mythical status on Merseyside, with the defender rarely appearing to come anywhere near ending his goal drought across his 280 outings.

So when the 29-year-old stepped forward to take his turn in a penalty shoot-out filled with drama and unexpected twists, a hushed anticipation descended over Anfield.

As it turned out, the nerves were unfounded, with Gomez coolly dispatching the ball into the top right-hand corner past Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders to nudge Iraola's side 6-5 in front.

It proved to be the decisive moment, as visiting defender Wesley Fofana subsequently sent the next spot-kick almost into orbit, securing Liverpool's passage into a Carabao Cup quarterfinal against Iraola's former employer, Bournemouth.

Does a goal in a penalty shootout count toward a player's senior record? Only the most churlish would deny Gomez his special moment.

Even prior to his superb spot-kick, this was an evening for the defender to savor, captaining a heavily-rotated team in an increasingly fraught encounter that had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

The most recent player to deputize at right-back, Gomez faced a stern examination for much of the contest against the elusive Morgan Rogers, but eventually won the duel, aided by establishing his authority through some robust tackles.

Indeed, Gomez's readiness to put himself in harm's way was clear during the second period with a courageous block to thwart a goal-bound strike from Rogers.

Admittedly, there was some unavoidable ring-rust on just his second starting appearance of the campaign.

However, he was also capable of providing an attacking outlet, particularly when his delivery created a second-half opportunity wasted by Ronald Araujo.

Then came the spot-kicks. Nobody would have anticipated Gomez emerging as the match-winner.

But then, there's nobody like him. Just ask the Liverpool faithful.
