The latest England squad for the upcoming international break has been revealed. As ever, Thomas Tuchel has made some big calls by leaving out some talented players.

The Three Lions will take on Croatia and Spain on November 12 and 15, before domestic football returns. Tuchel's men currently sit second in their Nations League group, three points behind Spain, who won 3-2 when the two teams met in September.

Having finished third at the 2026 World Cup, this international break is a time to assess the squad. With Euro 2028 the next major tournament – one England must qualify for despite co-hosting – Tuchel must work out which players he wants to commit to, and which players he wants to move on from.

With that in mind, it's rather telling that five senior stars have not made the latest England squad. And while the German is calling the shots, they may never return to the international fold.

Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish is in the news for all the wrong reasons right now. Indeed, having missed Everton training after an alleged night on the booze, he was dropped from David Moyes' squad in October and has yet to re-appear for the Toffees since.

With his club future very much in doubt, it's no surprise that his international career is also teetering on the brink. Grealish last played for England in 2024 when Lee Carsley was interim. He scored twice in three games as he looked set to reignite his England career, but Tuchel has yet to call him up since taking over.

Now 31, it feels unlikely that Grealish will add to his 39 caps unless he enjoys a quite remarkable late-career renaissance.

Harry Maguire

For years, Harry Maguire was a stalwart at the heart of the Three Lions defence, winning 66 caps as he shone at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, as well as Euro 2020. This was all under Gareth Southgate, however, with Tuchel not quite as trusting of the Manchester United star.

Much like Grealish, Maguire has hardly had a look-in since the German took over. The centre-back has played just twice for Tuchel, featuring in the ill-fated draw and loss to Uruguay and Japan on the eve of the 2026 World Cup. He was then left out of the squad entirely for that tournament.

Maguire was supposedly 'shocked' by the snub, and his mother didn't hide her outrage either. That very public reaction probably hasn't helped his case, and the 33-year-old hasn't been called up since. He will quite probably never play for the Three Lions again.

Phil Foden

Unlike most on this list, Phil Foden has time on his side. Still 26, he could yet rediscover his best form and force his way back into the England squad. When watching the midfielder over the past few seasons, however, it's hard to escape the feeling that he might have peaked.

The six-time Premier League winner is a joy to watch when in form, but has scored just seven league goals in the past two campaigns, with consistent displays few and far between. Even at his best for club, he struggled to deliver the same levels for his country, finding the back of the net just four times in 49 England caps.

Like Maguire, Foden played in those pre-World Cup friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, and hasn't featured for the Three Lions since. All hope is not lost on his international career yet, but the light is swiftly starting to fade.

Luke Shaw

It's quite remarkable that Luke Shaw only has 34 caps for England. After all, he made his debut over a decade ago (in 2014) and was Southgate's first-choice left-back at three major tournaments. Injuries, of course, have played their part in limiting his appearances and perhaps fitness issues explain why Tuchel doesn't appear to fancy the 31-year-old defender.

The Manchester United star has not been seen in an England shirt since the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain. Injury issues kept Shaw out of the first half of that tournament, and he's currenlty sidelined with a muscular problem. Even if he were fit, though, it feels as though his time with the Three Lions has reached its end.

For years, fans have been stunned by both Southgate and Tuchel's repeated faith in Jordan Henderson. He left Liverpool in 2023 but, somewhat surprisingly, continued to make international squads despite mixed spells at Al-Ettifaq and Ajax.

Having found a bit of form at Brentford, he was called into the side for the 2026 World Cup, before a freak injury limited him to just one appearance in the summer. Since then, he's secured a move to Chelsea, which has gone pretty well so far. Despite that, it looks as though Henderson's England career is now over. With 91 caps, the 36-year-old has had an impressive innings, but having been left out of the last two squads, he shouldn't expect to hear the phone ring again.
