Ruben Amorim sent a strong message to his Milan players after their shocking 2-0 Europa League defeat to Ferencvaros. ‘We have to improve, otherwise it’s over.’
The coach was visibly stunned by the performance from his squad at San Siro, just days after a completely different approach was taken to beat Inter 3-1 in the Derby della Madonnina.
They didn’t have a shot on target in the first half, and capitulated to a Lenny Joseph brace, allowing several other big scoring opportunities to the Hungarian side.
After his strong words in the post-match interview with Sky Sport Italia, Amorim went even further in the press conference, warning that his entire tenure could be cut short.
“I’m simply saying what I see, because you’re not stupid, and I don’t want to fool anyone,” he said.
“I have every reason to defend the team, so when I speak like this, I take responsibility first and foremost, because the team is my responsibility.
“But we cannot afford to do something like this, especially in the first half, in front of our fans, at our home. We can’t do it.
“We have to improve, otherwise it’s over.”
Amorim had already said that it was clear Milan were “not ready to be competitive” every three days, as they have lost three of their first four Europa League fixtures and risk an early exit from the competition.
“This is my feeling, but I’m not the one saying it. The facts prove it. And today’s game was proof of it, we’re not mentally ready. The technical aspect has nothing to do with it. The rotation has nothing to do with it. You can’t tell me that the starting lineup wasn’t up to the task of winning the game.
“We gave ourselves all the chances we had, especially at the start. I remember certain reactions when we lost the ball: they weren’t at all the same as the ones we saw three days ago, and we’d had four days to rest.”
