Luis Enrique: PSG focused on the present after ‘bizzare’ win at Villarreal
Luis Enrique: PSG focused on the present after ‘bizzare’ win at Villarreal

Luis Enrique insisted he would not be looking too deep into Paris Saint-Germain's thumping win over Villarreal in the Champions League, ahead of facing Troyes on Saturday.

PSG made Champions League history with their 6-0 victory at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Tuesday, blowing their opponents away with a flurry of goals in the first half.

The Parisiens led 4-0 after just 17 minutes against Villarreal, the second-earliest a team has scored four in a European Cup or Champions League match, after Benfica against Ujpest in November 1960 (16th minute).

PSG also became the first team in Champions League history to score 4+ goals in four consecutive games in the competition, while they have now reeled off 10 consecutive wins in all competitions for the second time under Luis Enrique (also 10 between January and March 2025).

Luis Enrique's side also took their goals total in the Champions League to 20 after their opening four matches, the fewest games any team has taken to reach that total.

"It was an unusual match with four goals in eight minutes, which isn't normal. It's almost bizarre, difficult to play," Luis Enrique said of the win. "I don't like this kind of game.

"I much prefer to win rather than lose, but normally there's not that sort of difference between the teams. I think it was the same thing between Lens and Como.

"It's an accident, it can happen to any team. It can happen in football, but it's not the norm. Villarreal is in the past, Troyes is another match.

"There's a lot of expectation and that's why I'm concerned."

The only negative from PSG's midweek win was an injury to Maghnes Akliouche, who the club have confirmed will require treatment over the coming days.

PSG also released a statement saying an agreement had been reached that Achraf Hakimi would have a period of rest ahead of the upcoming international break.

Hakimi was key to PSG's 5-1 win over Le Havre in their last league game. He was involved in all five of PSG's goals (three goals, two assists), as many contributions as he had in his previous 32 appearances combined (two goals, three assists).

Troyes are languishing at the opposite end of the table, sitting 16th in Ligue 1 despite going unbeaten in their last two matches in the competition.

"We know there's a lot of expectation against Troyes. Everyone expects us to score a lot of goals, but that's not football," Luis Enrique added on the task of facing Troyes.

"We have to stay focused on this game. If we're thinking about Villarreal and start Saturday's game distracted, you can play badly.

"But it's always with the same intensity. It's like that you can achieve new things by staying focused on the present.

"If we win on Saturday, it'll be the first time that we have won all our games between the two international windows. That's a source of additional motivation."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

PSG – Senny Mayulu

Having scored in his last two Ligue 1 appearances, Mayulu could become the third-youngest player to score in three consecutive top-flight games for the club at 20 years and 174 days old, after Kylian Mbappe (18y 361d) and Desire Doue (19y 320d).

Mayulu also found the back of the net in their thumping win over Villarreal, and he will want to keep that run going at the Parc des Princes.

Troyes – Antoine Mille

Troyes are one of three teams in Europe's top five leagues, alongside Lorient and Schalke, not to have a single player with more than one goal this season.

Mille is one of those players to find the back of the net, while he has also created more chances (15) than any other player for Troyes in Ligue 1 so far.

MATCH PREDICTION: PSG WIN

PSG have won nine of their 11 home Ligue 1 matches against Troyes (D2), only hosting Strasbourg (35 times) and Bastia (29) more often without ever losing in the competition.

Luis Enrique's side have also scored in each of their last 29 Ligue 1 matches (68 goals in total) and have only had a longer run once, which was 44 games under Thomas Tuchel between August 2018 and September 2019.

The Parisiens have also netted in each of their last 53 home games in Ligue 1 (134 goals in total, 2.5 per match), with no team having a longer such run since Nice between 1975 and 1978 (55).

Troyes, however, are unbeaten in their last two Ligue 1 matches (W1 D1) but have not had a longer run in the same season since between August and September 2022 (three). They could keep a third consecutive clean sheet in Ligue 1 for the first time since May 2013 (three).

Troyes have avoided defeat in just two of their 11 away Ligue 1 games against the reigning champions (D2), but they did score three goals in their most recent such match, a 4-3 loss against PSG in October 2022.

Troyes have failed to score in each of their last three away games (0-2 v Lille, 0-2 v Angers, 0-0 v Toulouse), as many times as in their previous 17 in all competitions. They could fail to score in four consecutive away Ligue 1 matches for the first time since between November and December 2012 (four).
