Napoli thrash Monza 4-1 as De Bruyne inspires second-half surge

MONZA, Italy — Napoli returned to winning ways in Serie A with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Monza on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, scoring three times in the second half to secure all three points at the Stadio Brianteo.

Rasmus Højlund gave Napoli an early lead before Gustavo Varela equalised for the hosts shortly before half-time. Matteo Politano put Napoli back in front three minutes after the restart, with Rafa Marín and substitute Kevin De Bruyne adding further goals to complete the victory.

The result gave Napoli a valuable boost after two league matches without a win and strengthened their push to climb the Serie A table.

Højlund gives Napoli an early advantage

Monza started brightly and nearly took the lead inside the opening minute, forcing goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić into an early save.

However, Napoli struck first in the 10th minute. Giovanni Di Lorenzo split the home defence with a precise through ball, allowing Højlund to finish with his left foot past goalkeeper Semuel Pizzignacco.

Monza responded with determination and created several opportunities to draw level. Gustavo Varela tested Milinković-Savić, while further attempts from the home side kept Napoli’s defence under pressure.

The hosts eventually found their equaliser in the 43rd minute. Jay Robinson delivered a cross from the left, and Varela rose to head the ball into the net, taking his league tally to eight goals.

The teams went into half-time level at 1-1, with Monza having made Napoli work hard for their advantage.

Politano restores Napoli’s lead

Napoli wasted little time regaining the advantage after the restart.

In the 48th minute, Politano found space and fired a precise left-footed shot into the far corner, putting the visitors ahead at 2-1.

Monza continued to look for another equaliser. Foe Ondoa unleashed a powerful effort in the 54th minute, but Milinković-Savić produced another important save to preserve Napoli’s lead.

The home side remained competitive, but Napoli gradually gained greater control of the match and began to make their attacking quality count.

Rafa Marín and De Bruyne seal the victory

Napoli extended their advantage in the 62nd minute when Rafa Marín rose highest to meet a corner and headed the ball into the bottom corner. It was a crucial goal that gave the visitors breathing space after Monza’s spirited performance.

De Bruyne then made an immediate impact after coming off the bench. In the 67th minute, the Belgian midfielder finished from Noa Lang’s assist to make it 4-1 and put the result beyond doubt.

Napoli continued to threaten, with Scott McTominay going close to adding another goal, but the visitors were content to manage the closing stages and secure a comfortable victory.

Monza had competed well for much of the first half and created several chances, but Napoli’s clinical finishing after the break proved decisive.

Napoli return to winning ways

The victory was an important response for Napoli, who had gone two Serie A matches without a win. Their four-goal performance also demonstrated the attacking depth available to the team, with De Bruyne making an immediate contribution from the bench.

For Monza, the defeat was frustrating after an encouraging first-half display. Varela continued his impressive scoring form, but the hosts were unable to contain Napoli after Politano’s second-half strike.

Napoli will now look to build on the result and carry the momentum into their next league fixture.
