Nigeria international Alex Iwobi scored the decisive first-half goal as Fulham defeated Hull City 1–0 at Craven Cottage on Saturday, October 17, to secure their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 campaign.
Iwobi’s 34th-minute strike ended Fulham’s six-match winless start to the league season and lifted the London club out of the relegation zone, providing relief for head coach Álvaro Arbeloa.
The victory was not without late drama, however, as Fulham were forced to finish the match with 10 men following Ryan Sessegnon’s stoppage-time red card.
Fulham started brightly and created several opportunities before breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute.
The goal followed a mistake by Hull’s Brooke Norton-Cuffy, whose failure to clear allowed midfielder Sander Berge to direct the ball into Iwobi’s path. The Nigerian midfielder then struck first-time, sending the ball past goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis and into the net.
Fulham continued to threaten after taking the lead, with Iwobi going close to scoring again and goalkeeper Tzolakis making important saves to keep Hull in the contest.
The hosts also came close to doubling their advantage in the 74th minute when Gonzalo García headed Iwobi’s cross against the crossbar.
Despite their dominance, Fulham were unable to score a second goal, leaving the home supporters anxious during the closing stages.
Fulham’s victory was complicated in stoppage time when substitute Ryan Sessegnon received a straight red card for a late challenge on Hull substitute Robinio Vaz.
The dismissal reduced Fulham to 10 men for the final moments, but Arbeloa’s side successfully protected their narrow lead to secure the much-needed victory.
The result was particularly significant for Arbeloa, who had faced growing scrutiny following Fulham’s difficult opening six league matches.
The win gave the Spanish coach his first Premier League victory since taking charge and eased the immediate pressure surrounding his position.
Iwobi’s decisive strike added to his record as one of Nigeria’s established performers in English football.
According to FotMob’s match report, the goal took his Premier League career tally to 36, drawing him level with former Nigeria international Peter Odemwingie as the joint-sixth-highest-scoring Nigerian in the competition’s history at the time of the match.
The midfielder also contributed creatively throughout the encounter, including delivering the cross that led to García’s second-half effort against the crossbar.
His performance offered Fulham an important attacking outlet in a match where the hosts generated numerous chances but ultimately relied on his first-half goal to claim all three points.
Fulham’s 1–0 victory lifted them out of the Premier League relegation zone and ended their winless opening run.
For Hull City, the defeat extended their recent struggles, with the visitors unable to find an equaliser despite Fulham’s late reduction to 10 players.
Fulham will now look to build on the result and turn their first victory into a more consistent run of performances as the Premier League season continues.
