Veteran cornerback Marlon Humphrey had a night to forget on Thursday as the Baltimore Ravens suffered a 33-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 9. The disappointing performance came just days after Humphrey criticized the team’s fans for their lack of support, saying they often complain even when Baltimore wins.
Humphrey’s comments have now drawn a response from NFL legend Shannon Sharpe, who took aim at the cornerback after his latest struggles on the field.
Speaking on the “Marlon Humphrey Show,” the Ravens cornerback had questioned the way fans react to the team’s performances.
“It’s really not healthy, the stigma that’s placed on us by our own fans,” Humphrey said. “I think they’re always freaking out. When are they not freaking out, to be honest? I’ve won a ball game, and you know what someone said? They told me, ‘Y’all almost lost today.’ Like, did we win or not?”
Humphrey struggled to back up those comments against Jacksonville. He gave up a 52-yard reception to Jaguars tight end Nate Boerkircher on the opening drive, giving Baltimore an early headache in what turned into a long night for the Ravens.
Sharpe addressed both Humphrey’s comments and his performance during Friday’s episode of “Nightcap,” arguing that the cornerback needed to focus more on his play than on his podcast.
“Marlon Humphrey, oh my goodness, it’s infectious,” Sharpe said. “That was a zone coverage. First play of the game. Whose responsibility is that? Tight end getting 52 yards down the field. And then he gets upset. He goes on his podcast and talks about the fans.
“I’m sorry, the fans just want the guys to play hard. I’m sorry, fans have a level of expectation. I’m sorry, Marlon. You did it to yourself. You were an All-Pro at one point in time.”
Sharpe went on to remind Humphrey of the player he used to be and questioned where his focus has been lately.
“You went to the Pro Bowls, and now you look nothing like yourself. Guess what? If you spend as much time in your playbook or trying to get better like you do in your podcast, I guarantee you that things will turn around,” Sharpe continued.
“If we’re trying to do things outside and it’s impacting what we do in our main area of expertise, are you gonna continue to do it, or are you gonna say, ‘You know what, I might need to put a little more focus on the field.'”
Since the Ravens selected Humphrey No. 16 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, he has established himself as one of the league’s top cornerbacks. The former Alabama standout has earned four Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro nods. He also led the NFL in forced fumbles in 2020.
However, Humphrey has struggled in coverage these last couple of years, and Baltimore’s defense has also had its share of problems. The Ravens have allowed 2,177 passing yards this year, the second-most in the NFL, and rank No. 18 with a PFN Defense Impact Score of 73.3.
Humphrey has allowed 8.5 yards per target and 14.4 yards per completion, along with 359 receiving yards. Those numbers rank among the highest of his career. He has recorded 32 tackles (20 solo), one forced fumble, and nine passes defended this season.
His PFN Cornerback Impact score of 71.7 ranks 69th among NFL cornerbacks. Humphrey is also in the final year of the five-year, $97.5 million contract extension he signed in 2020.
