Juventus CEO wants ‘more Italian identity’ within the squad

Juventus CEO Giovanni Carnevali believes the squad needs a "more Italian identity" if they are to challenge for major trophies again.

The Bianconeri have not won Serie A since 2019-20 after winning nine consecutive Scudetti from 2011-12 onwards.

Last season, following their early struggles under Igor Tudor, Luciano Spalletti's side failed to qualify for the Champions League after finishing sixth.

Juve have been inconsistent in the league this term, winning 17 points from 10 games to sit seventh, though they picked up a vital victory over Napoli on Sunday.

In their home win over Napoli, the only Italian player to start for Juve was goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who is on loan from Tottenham.

Federico Gatti and Andrea Cambiaso both came off the bench, while Jeff Ekhator, Carlo Pinsoglio and Daniele Rugani were all unused subtitutes.

Carnevali was appointed in June this year to replace Damien Comolli, and the Juve CEO believes investing in youth players can help the club return to their former ways.

"We need more Italian identity within our club, and we need to develop young players who can one day make it into the Juventus first team," he said via Corriere della Sera.

"We need to rediscover our enthusiasm and sense of belonging. We'll have to put in the effort, take things seriously, and have a strong desire to do things; we need clear ideas and to know where we want to go.

"I know really well that results over the last few years have not been positive. You must be good at overcoming difficult moments, and we can only do it together.

"We don't expect to achieve anything extraordinary overnight. We must comply with UEFA regulations. Rebuilding a great club takes time."
