According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Victor Osimhen played a crucial role in Galatasaray’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Genclerbirligi, as the Nigerian striker spearheaded the visitors’ attack before a late own goal handed his team all three points.
Despite failing to score, Osimhen posed a significant threat to the opposition’s defence and created several dangerous opportunities throughout the match.
Galatasaray found it difficult to break the deadlock in the first half, with Genclerbirligi defending resolutely. Osimhen tried to make an early impact but struggled to get past the hosts’ defence. His attempt was blocked in the 24th minute, while he was caught offside twice as he looked to take advantage of spaces behind the defensive line.
The Nigerian forward continued to lead Galatasaray’s attacking efforts in search of an opener. In the 30th minute, his shot from the edge of the penalty area was blocked by a Genclerbirligi defender. He later met a lofted cross with a header in the 39th minute, but his effort lacked the power needed to trouble goalkeeper Irfan Egribayat.
Osimhen also showcased his playmaking ability in the 45th minute when he delivered an excellent pass to Leroy Sane. However, the German winger failed to hit the target, sending his shot narrowly wide of the left post and missing an opportunity to give Galatasaray the lead before half-time.
After the restart, Osimhen maintained his attacking threat as he continued searching for a goal. In the 60th minute, he rose above the opposition defenders to connect with a corner kick, but Egribayat gathered his header comfortably. Ten minutes later, the striker received a promising pass inside the penalty area but sent his shot narrowly wide of the right post.
His constant pressure eventually paid off in the 88th minute when Galatasaray broke the deadlock through an unfortunate own goal by goalkeeper Irfan Egribayat, who accidentally turned the ball into his own net.
Osimhen was shown a yellow card during stoppage time, but Galatasaray successfully protected their advantage to claim the victory. Although he failed to find the net, his movement, aerial ability, intelligent link-up play and consistent attacking pressure made him a standout performer and a deserving Man of the Match.
