According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal has been handed a four-match suspension by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following his confrontation with Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal during Saturday’s La Liga encounter.
According to reports, the RFEF Disciplinary Committee imposed the punishment after reviewing the incident that led to Bernal’s straight red card in Betis’ 5-2 defeat to Barcelona.
The decision follows a heated exchange between the two players shortly after half-time, when tensions escalated during an incident involving Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez.
Bernal was dismissed in the 54th minute after grabbing an opponent by the neck and headbutting him twice in quick succession while the ball was out of play, according to the referee’s report cited in the disciplinary proceedings.
The report also stated that the opposing player did not require medical attention and was able to continue playing following the confrontation.
The disciplinary committee reportedly based its decision on Article 103 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, which provides for a suspension of between four and twelve matches for an assault that does not cause injury. Bernal received the minimum punishment stipulated under the provision.
The incident began when Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles attempted to help Fermin Lopez up after the Barcelona midfielder had gone to ground. Yamal intervened in support of his teammate, bringing him into a confrontation with Bernal.
The Betis midfielder subsequently grabbed Yamal before the altercation escalated into a clash of heads. The referee responded by showing Bernal a straight red card, leaving the home side to continue the match with ten players.
Barcelona were leading 3-2 at the time of the dismissal, but they went on to strengthen their advantage and secure a convincing 5-2 victory. Eric Garcia scored eight minutes after the incident, while Dani Olmo also found the net as the Catalan side completed the win.
Bernal’s suspension represents a setback for Real Betis, who will now have to manage their midfield options without the player for the next four matches covered by the ban. His absence could force the coaching staff to consider alternative combinations as the club navigates its upcoming fixtures.
For Barcelona, the incident has added another talking point to a match that was already significant because of the result. The disciplinary decision also underlines the consequences players can face when physical confrontations go beyond the normal intensity of competitive football.
