According to a report by Football London on Thursday October 29, 2026, Mike Penders was the center of attention during Wednesday's Carabao Cup match between Chelsea and Liverpool at Anfield. The young goalkeeper was ready to prove himself after taking criticism in his last game.
During Chelsea's disheartening 2-0 Premier League loss at Stamford Bridge last weekend, the Belgian goalkeeper had a tough time of it after giving Spurs the opening goal on a costly error.
Despite his best efforts, Penders was unable to save Chelsea from elimination at the hands of Liverpool in the penalty shootout. The 21-year-old made a save, but the Blues never had a chance to advance past the quarterfinals because Wesley Fofana missed a key opportunity.
After giving up a penalty in regulation and missing the penalty kick in the shootout, Fofana had a very disappointing evening. Malo Gusto had a tough time of it as well, and some of Chelsea's traveling fans were not happy about his substitution.
Even though Chelsea lost, Penders showed signs of mental recovery from his Tottenham loss with a promising performance. His improved statistics give his supporters reason to be optimistic about his development in the post.
The Chelsea goalkeeper made a total of three stops in the match against Liverpool, with two of those stops coming from inside the penalty area, as reported by Sofascore. His ability to handle aerial situations was on display during the contest, as he recorded one high claim.
Having said that, Penders had a lot of trouble with his distribution all game long. A dismal 54% passing accuracy rate against Liverpool was reflected in the youngster's 19 completions out of 35 attempts.
In particular, he struggled with his long-range distribution, finishing only three of his nineteen attempts at the distance. This indicated a significant area that needs improvement as he grows into a reliable goalkeeper, as it represented about 16% accuracy.
In spite of this, Penders remained calm under pressure from Liverpool and made crucial saves when called for. He should be able to put the Tottenham gaffe behind him and enter Chelsea's forthcoming matches with a new sense of confidence after his performance.
After this, Chelsea will focus on Saturday's Premier League match against Manchester United. Both teams are under a lot of pressure, but Penders will be looking to keep up his good play and give Alonso's team a much-needed win.
