Arsenal Confirm Interest In €80m World Cup Winner

Arsenal have renewed their interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Alex Baena as Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta consider strengthening their attacking options ahead of 2027.

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, Arsenal are serious about signing the Spain international, whose impressive performances since the World Cup have attracted attention from several European clubs.

Baena joined Atletico Madrid from Villarreal for €42 million last year after establishing himself as one of LaLiga's most creative attacking players. However, the 25-year-old initially struggled to reproduce his best form following his move to the Spanish capital.

Although he is frequently deployed on the left wing, Baena is not a conventional winger. His biggest strengths involve creating opportunities, controlling attacking movements and linking play rather than simply relying on pace and individual dribbling.

His performances at the World Cup appear to have given him fresh momentum. Baena played an important role in Spain's successful campaign, stepping in for the injured Nico Williams as La Roja secured the trophy.

He has continued that form at club level, becoming one of Atletico's standout performers during their impressive start to the season.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone has also praised his development, highlighting his improved confidence and understanding of the game.

"Baena sees the game differently than others; he’s stronger and more confident since the World Cup. He’s the player we went out to sign. We’ll have to manage his playing time so that his unique qualities can shine through," Simeone said.

Arsenal's interest in Baena dates back to his time at Villarreal, with the Gunners previously monitoring his progress before his move to Atletico.

Arteta is believed to be keen on adding another left-sided attacker after Arsenal failed to sign Vinicius Junior during the summer transfer window. Baena's versatility and creative qualities make him an attractive option for the North London club.

However, securing his signature will not be straightforward. FootballTransfers reports that Atletico would demand at least €80 million to consider selling him next summer.

Bayern Munich, Tottenham, Manchester City and Newcastle have also monitored the midfielder, increasing competition for his signature.

Although an immediate transfer is unlikely, Arsenal's continued interest suggests Baena could become an important target as Arteta prepares his squad for the 2027 campaign.
