According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has revealed that Barcelona previously showed interest in signing him but never submitted an official transfer offer despite holding discussions with his representatives.
The Spanish midfielder, who currently plays for Real Zaragoza, disclosed this during an interview with former Atletico Madrid player Mario Suarez on his podcast.
Herrera explained that Barcelona considered the possibility of bringing him to the club on several occasions, particularly while he was playing for Athletic Club and Manchester United. However, despite the speculation and conversations surrounding a potential transfer, an agreement was never reached.
"There has been a lot of speculation over the years – there was talk when I was at Athletic Bilbao, and there was talk when I was at Manchester United – but it's true that there's never actually been an offer," Herrera said, as quoted by SPORT.
The former Manchester United midfielder also confirmed that Barcelona had contacted his agent during those periods to discuss a possible move.
"They did have discussions with my agent, but I wasn't present at those meetings," he added.
However, Herrera emphasised that the Catalan giants never made a formal proposal to secure his signature, despite their reported interest in his services.
The midfielder also acknowledged that playing for either Barcelona or Real Madrid would have been a remarkable achievement in his professional career.
"Playing for Real Madrid or FC Barcelona is something that stays with you for the rest of your life," he stated.
Despite recognising the importance of representing either Spanish powerhouse, Herrera made it clear that he does not support Barcelona or Real Madrid, insisting that his allegiance remains with Real Zaragoza, the club he grew up supporting.
Herrera initially made a name for himself as a talented midfielder at Athletic Club before securing a move to Manchester United, where he became a fan favourite during his time at Old Trafford.
He later featured for Paris Saint-Germain before returning to Athletic Club. The midfielder subsequently joined Argentine giants Boca Juniors before completing a move to Real Zaragoza during the summer transfer window.
His latest revelation has now shed more light on the transfer rumours linking him with Barcelona at different stages of his career.
Although the Catalan club reportedly considered signing him, the absence of an official offer meant Herrera never came close to completing a move to the Spanish giants.
