According to a report by Metro on Monday October 26, 2026, John Obi Mikel has warned Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso that Estevao could consider leaving Stamford Bridge if his limited playing time continues, urging the Spaniard to give the talented Brazilian more opportunities before the season ends.
The 19-year-old winger arrived from Palmeiras in summer 2025 and impressed during his debut campaign, recording eight goals and four assists. However, a serious hamstring injury in April ended his season prematurely, also costing him a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad.
Since Alonso took charge, Estevao has struggled to secure regular starts, featuring from the beginning only twice in the Carabao Cup this season. Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro have established themselves as Chelsea’s preferred attacking combination.
Reports from Spain suggest the teenager has become frustrated with his situation, while Barcelona are reportedly monitoring developments and considering a potential move for the promising winger.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel acknowledged Chelsea’s attacking strength but insisted Estevao deserves more opportunities. “When you have a player who is so good, a brilliant player who has so much talent and ability, it’s hard to see him not getting playing time,” the former midfielder explained.
Mikel believes Alonso can introduce the youngster without disturbing the existing attacking partnership, recommending second-half appearances to help him develop confidence, rhythm and consistency.
“He needs minutes. No disrespect to the Carabao Cup, but you want to be playing in the Champions League and Premier League,” Mikel said, emphasising the importance of testing himself against elite opposition.
The former Nigeria international fears continued frustration could eventually encourage Estevao to seek an exit, something he believes Chelsea must prevent. He described the teenager as a brilliant young player capable of contributing for years.
Mikel also urged Estevao to demonstrate determination during training, compete respectfully with teammates and prove he deserves a regular place in the starting eleven.
Chelsea currently sit fifth after their 2-0 defeat against Tottenham. Alonso’s side will attempt to recover against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup before hosting Manchester United in their next Premier League fixture.
