According to a post by Fabrizio Romano on X on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has strongly criticised the referee following a controversial handball incident involving Cucho Hernández and Barcelona defender Gerard Martín.
Pellegrini acknowledged that a handball occurred but questioned its relevance to the goal, arguing that the incident happened well before the ball entered the net.
“Yes, it was a handball. But it was 30 seconds before the goal,” Pellegrini said.
The Betis manager also argued that the circumstances leading to the handball should have been considered. He claimed that contact from Martín played a role in Cucho’s handling of the ball.
“If Gerard Martín doesn't push him from behind, Cucho doesn't touch it with his hand,” he added.
Pellegrini’s comments reflected his frustration with the officiating and the decision-making surrounding the incident. He questioned the referee’s understanding of the game and the criteria applied when assessing key moments.
“This performance from the referee was absolutely shameful. They have zero football criteria whatsoever,” he said.
The remarks add to the debate over how referees should assess handball incidents, particularly when there is a considerable gap between the offence and a subsequent goal.
Pellegrini’s criticism focused on both the timing of the incident and the alleged push that preceded it. His comments make clear that he believes the referee should have considered the full sequence of events before reaching a decision.
