Peter Schmeichel Reveals What Carrick Did Wrong That Made Him Lose Against Chelsea

According to reports by Daily Post on Wednesday November 4, 2026, former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has explained what Michael Carrick got wrong during the club's Premier League defeat to Chelsea, following the manager's successful substitutions against AS Roma.

Schmeichel praised Carrick for making changes that transformed Manchester United's performance during their dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over the Italian side at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The former United goalkeeper specifically highlighted five substitutes who made an important difference after coming off the bench.

They were Youri Tielemans, Lisandro Martínez, Shea Lacey, Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount.

Manchester United had entered the Roma encounter under pressure after a disappointing run of results. Their situation became even more difficult when Roma scored twice in the opening 17 minutes, leaving Carrick's side facing another frustrating night.

However, the manager's changes helped United improve their performance and eventually complete a remarkable comeback.

Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot, while Matheus Cunha netted twice to give Manchester United a 3-2 victory and secure an important result in the Champions League.

Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, Schmeichel compared Carrick's substitutions against Roma with the changes he made during the previous Premier League meeting with Chelsea.

The former goalkeeper explained that the manager had struggled to get the desired response from his substitutes against Chelsea, but his decisions against Roma produced a completely different outcome.

“Michael on Saturday vs. Chelsea made some substitutions that unfortunately did not have any kind of impact on the game,” Schmeichel said.

He then praised the manager for making better decisions against Roma, highlighting the influence of the five players introduced during the match.

“Today, he made substitutions [Youri Tielemans, Lisandro Martínez, Shea Lacey, Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount] that made an impact,” he added.

Schmeichel's assessment suggests that the timing and effectiveness of substitutions played an important role in United's recovery against Roma.

The victory was particularly important for Carrick, who had faced increasing scrutiny following the team's disappointing results and questions about his future at Old Trafford.

United's performance against Roma offered some encouragement, although the manager will need his players to maintain that level of determination in their upcoming fixtures.

Manchester United will now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they are scheduled to face Aston Villa this weekend.
