Manchester United identify Eddie Howe as leading candidate to replace Michael Carrick

According to a report by Metro on Monday, October 26, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly identified Eddie Howe as their preferred candidate to replace Michael Carrick, whose position is becoming increasingly uncertain following the club's disappointing start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.

Reports indicate that United's senior executives held discussions about Carrick's future on Sunday night after the club recorded its worst start to a Premier League season in 40 years.

Although some senior figures believe Carrick was not adequately supported during the summer transfer window, the report suggests that the likelihood of him being dismissed remains high.

United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, is reportedly backing Howe for the position, believing that the club needs a manager with extensive Premier League experience to turn its fortunes around.

Howe departed Newcastle United earlier this summer and was initially expected to take some time away from football management. However, reports suggest that he is interested in the possibility of becoming Manchester United's next manager at Old Trafford.

The Englishman would face a significant task in rebuilding the team's confidence, improving performances and restoring stability at a club that has struggled to achieve consistency under several previous managers.

Nevertheless, Howe is not the only candidate being considered by United. Head of recruitment Christopher Vivell reportedly prefers Julian Nagelsmann, while Unai Emery is also regarded as a serious contender by certain individuals within the club.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has also been mentioned as a possible option. However, questions remain over whether the Italian would be comfortable working within Manchester United's existing football structure.

United's leadership must now decide whether to continue backing Carrick or make another managerial change in an effort to rescue their season.

Although Howe's experience in the Premier League makes him an appealing choice, the club's decision-makers must establish a clear long-term vision to ensure that their next managerial appointment delivers sustainable success.

For the time being, Carrick's future remains unresolved, with the club yet to officially announce his departure or confirm the appointment of a replacement.
