According to a report by FootballTransfers, on Sunday October 18, 2026, Chelsea appear to have made the right call by holding on to Josh Acheampong, despite reported interest from several leading European clubs during the summer.
The 20-year-old defender has attracted attention from teams including Arsenal, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.
Before the season began, new manager Xabi Alonso reportedly met with Acheampong’s representatives and assured them the youngster would have an important role.
After starting only eight Premier League matches last season, Acheampong has featured in six of Chelsea’s nine games across all competitions this campaign.
He has played the full 90 minutes in both league matches since the international break: a 5-1 win over Bournemouth and Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Everton.
The Everton result gave Chelsea their first clean sheet of the season. Alonso praised his side’s discipline and composure, saying they controlled the match, defended well and created chances after the break.
Acheampong also impressed individually, helping contain Jack Grealish and former Chelsea teammate Tyrique George.
His one-on-one defending, calmness on the ball and ability to carry it forward have strengthened his case for a regular place in Alonso’s starting lineup.
With plenty of room to develop, Acheampong could become an increasingly important player for Chelsea. Reports suggest the club has begun discussions over a new long-term contract.
