According to a report by London Evening Standard on Monday October 26, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly identified Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as a major transfer target for the next manager, with the club preparing to strengthen their defence ahead of the January transfer window.
The Red Devils are considering Branthwaite as they plan a rebuilding project following Michael Carrick’s expected departure from Old Trafford. Football Insider reports that the 24-year-old has moved to the top of United’s defensive shortlist.
Branthwaite has overcome previous injury concerns to start Everton’s opening seven Premier League matches this season. His recent availability represents an encouraging development after suffering repeated fitness problems over the past 18 months.
Manchester United have admired the English centre-back for several years. In the summer of 2024, the club reportedly submitted two offers for him, but Everton rejected both after his impressive breakthrough campaign in the Premier League.
Branthwaite has earned three England caps and remains contracted to Everton until 2030. However, the Merseyside club are reportedly expected to demand approximately £80 million before considering a sale.
United have already invested heavily in other areas of their squad. After reshaping their attacking options before the 2025–26 campaign, they strengthened midfield this summer by bringing in Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos for a reported combined £155 million.
Their next priority is improving a defence that has struggled with injuries and inconsistent performances. Lisandro Martinez recently raised questions about his future after criticising technical director Jason Wilcox over perceived shortcomings in the club’s transfer strategy.
Since Wilcox arrived, Manchester United have reportedly spent more than £350 million on recruitment. However, their defensive additions have been limited to wing-back Patrick Dorgu and young centre-back Ayden Heaven.
Luke Shaw’s long-standing fitness concerns and Harry Maguire’s inconsistent displays have further highlighted the need for defensive reinforcements. Branthwaite could therefore provide an important option if United pursue their reported interest.
Nevertheless, injuries also affected Branthwaite last season, restricting him to just 10 Premier League appearances because of a recurring hamstring problem.
Liverpool are also reportedly interested in the Everton defender. A potential transfer would be particularly notable because Liverpool have not signed a player directly from their Merseyside rivals since bringing in Abel Xavier for £800,000 in 2002.
