Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has admitted that his future at Anfield is uncertain after the club decided against offering him a new contract, a situation that has reportedly attracted renewed interest from Real Madrid.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Wednesday 4 November 2026, the Argentina international described Liverpool’s decision as "painful" and "unpleasant", although he remains hopeful that the club could reconsider its position.
Mac Allister has been seeking improved terms since last season, but Liverpool have yet to open negotiations over a fresh deal.
His current contract runs until 2028, leaving the club with a decision to make ahead of the next transfer windows.
The 27-year-old endured a difficult campaign last season, with Liverpool struggling to find consistency in midfield.
While Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai secured new contracts, Mac Allister was left without an agreement.
He subsequently admitted that he was "sad" about the situation, while reports indicated that Liverpool had made him available to potential suitors, including Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants did not pursue a deal during the summer, but their interest could grow if the contract situation remains unresolved. Jose Mourinho has also reportedly identified the midfielder as one of his preferred targets.
Speaking to Argentine reporter Gaston Edul, Mac Allister explained how Liverpool's position affected him.
"Obviously, we’re in a situation where I have a year and a half left on my contract, and last season, I was told that the club’s idea was not to renew it, at least for now. And obviously, that was a painful, unpleasant situation," he said.
However, the midfielder insisted that remaining at Liverpool was still his priority.
"Not that much, because at the end of the day, I had and still have time left at this club, which is what I want most - to stay here."
Mac Allister also pointed to changes behind the scenes as a possible reason for optimism, with Andoni Iraola now in charge and the club undergoing changes in its sporting structure.
"The reality is that the manager has now changed, the sporting director has changed, and new investors are coming into the club.
"So I think I’m now in a position where anything can happen," he added.
The midfielder's improved performances this season have strengthened his case for a new agreement. However, Liverpool have yet to indicate that their position has changed, leaving uncertainty over whether he will remain at Anfield or become a target for Real Madrid.
