EPL Table After Arsenal's Hard-Fought 1-0 Win

According to a report by The Guardian published on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, moving within three points of Premier League leaders Manchester City and keeping their title hopes firmly alive.

The Gunners approached the encounter knowing that a victory was essential to maintaining pressure on Manchester City, who had strengthened their position at the summit with a dramatic 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday. Arsenal were therefore determined to collect all three points despite facing a difficult away fixture.

Nottingham Forest, however, proved challenging opponents, producing a disciplined defensive display that limited Arsenal's attacking opportunities throughout the opening half. Despite enjoying periods of possession, Mikel Arteta's men struggled to create clear chances, and both sides entered the half-time break with the scoreline still goalless.

Arsenal continued searching for an opening goal after the restart, but Forest remained organised and determined to prevent the visitors from taking control of the contest. The hosts defended resolutely, making the match increasingly difficult for the North London side as the minutes passed.

The decisive moment arrived in the 80th minute when Noni Madueke scored for Arsenal with an effort that took a deflection before beating Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels. His goal ultimately separated the two teams, as Arsenal successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.

Following the victory, Manchester City remained top of the Premier League table with 21 points from seven matches, maintaining a perfect record of seven wins. Arsenal occupied second position with 18 points from seven games, having recorded six victories and one defeat.

Brighton and Hove Albion moved into third place with 16 points after recording an emphatic 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday. Chelsea occupied fourth position with 13 points following their 2-0 win against Everton, while Liverpool remained fifth with 12 points after defeating Brentford 2-1.

Meanwhile, Manchester United continued struggling in the lower half of the standings after playing out a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road. Nottingham Forest also faced growing pressure following their defeat, while Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur remained among the teams experiencing difficulties near the bottom of the table.

Arsenal's latest triumph could become important in the title race, demonstrating their ability to secure valuable points even when they are not at their attacking best. The Gunners will now prepare for their next Premier League fixture against Everton, while Manchester City are scheduled to face Aston Villa.
