Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez has confirmed that his jaw surgery was successful and expects to return to action in a few weeks after suffering a serious injury during the Blues’ 2-0 victory over Everton.
According to a report by Football London on Sunday, 18 October 2026, the Argentine goalkeeper underwent surgery following a sickening collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Saturday’s Premier League encounter.
Martinez sustained the injury after the pair clashed heads while attempting to reach a cross. Both players immediately went to ground, prompting a lengthy stoppage as medical staff attended to them.
The match was halted for more than 10 minutes while Martinez received treatment before he was eventually carried off on a stretcher.
Chelsea players quickly called for medical assistance, with Levi Colwill visibly concerned by the incident.
The goalkeeper was subsequently taken to hospital for further examinations, with initial checks reportedly showing no major concerns involving his head, back and neck.
Providing an update from his hospital bed on Instagram, Martinez thanked supporters for their messages and offered an encouraging assessment of his recovery.
"Thanks to everyone for the messages, the operation went well. The most important thing is that we won and with a bow at 0. We'll be back in a few weeks."
His statement will offer Chelsea supporters some reassurance after the worrying incident, although his recovery timeline means the club could have to manage without him for several weeks.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso had earlier confirmed that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium, while explaining that further medical examinations were necessary to determine the extent of the injury.
"It was a concussion, but beyond that I do not know," he said speaking after the game. "I have only seen one clip of the incident, so we need to wait.
"What we know is that he left the stadium conscious and is now in hospital undergoing precautionary tests.
"We need to wait. Hopefully it will not be too serious, but at the moment we just have to wait."
Martinez’s injury comes at a difficult time for Chelsea as Alonso continues to establish his preferred team and build momentum in the Premier League.
Although the goalkeeper’s successful operation is an encouraging development, his expected absence could force the Blues to reassess their options between the posts ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
