According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday November 5, 2026, Samuel Umtiti has criticised Vinicius Junior’s performances for Real Madrid, claiming the Brazilian has lost his attacking threat and suggesting that missing out on the 2024 Ballon d’Or affected him. Other former players have also questioned his form after the AEK Athens match.
Speaking to RMC, Umtiti said Vinicius had been below his usual standard for months. He pointed to the forward’s poor finishing and inability to make the same impact in attack.
“I feel sorry for him, He hasn’t been at his best for months now. He’s struggling with his final touch, he’s wasting so many chances – he’s no longer a threat,” Umtiti said.
The former defender believes the 2024 Ballon d’Or result, which saw Rodri win ahead of Vinicius, marked a turning point for the Real Madrid star.
“Ever since he failed to win the Ballon d’Or, he’s been affected. We’re struggling to find the sparkling Vini of old,” he added.
Former Real Madrid striker Predrag Mijatovic offered another explanation. He believes competition for the left-wing position has increased the pressure on Vinicius. Yan Diomande has emerged as an alternative, leaving the Brazilian uncertain of his place in the starting team.
“Until now he had no competition, but now he does, and it shows. He’s now playing under a lot of pressure,” Mijatovic said.
However, he remains convinced that Vinicius can regain his best form if he relaxes and stays focused.
Jorge Valdano also questioned the Brazilian’s display against AEK Athens. He argued that Vinicius did not do enough to justify his place in the starting lineup, especially with Diomande competing for the position.
Valdano said the winger attempted few successful take-ons and produced only one good move. He added that the performance had not helped Vinicius reclaim a starting spot that Diomande appeared to have taken.
