According to a report by Football London on Thursday October 29, 2026, Former Arsenal academy striker Chuks Aneke has announced his retirement from professional football at 33, ending his playing career after representing several clubs across England and Europe throughout his professional journey.
Aneke confirmed his decision through Instagram on Wednesday, sharing a video montage featuring memorable career moments. The former forward also expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his footballing adventure.
In his retirement message, Aneke wrote: “I’d like to officially announce my retirement from professional football.” He thanked coaches, staff, teachers, friends, family and supporters who contributed throughout his career.
The former striker acknowledged that supporters and critics alike formed part of his journey, describing his experience as amazing. He also hinted at future opportunities beyond playing football professionally.
Aneke joined Arsenal’s academy in 2001, aged seven, before signing his first professional contract in July 2010. However, opportunities with the senior team remained limited during his development.
His only Arsenal first-team appearance came as a 90th-minute substitute during a League Cup match against Shrewsbury Town in 2011. Arsene Wenger previously compared his physical strength and technique to Yaya Toure.
Arsenal eventually released Aneke in June 2014, ending his 13-year association with the club. He subsequently pursued opportunities elsewhere, including loan spells with Stevenage, Preston North End and Crewe Alexandra.
His spell at Crewe proved particularly productive, with Aneke scoring 24 goals in 82 appearances. He also featured in their 2013 Football League Trophy final victory against Southend United at Wembley Stadium.
After spending two seasons with Belgian outfit Zulte Waregem, Aneke returned to England, joining MK Dons in August 2016. His impressive 19-goal campaign helped the club achieve promotion from League Two.
Aneke subsequently represented Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City before returning to Charlton in January 2022. He departed in 2025 after his contract expired, following the club’s promotion.
He joined Shrewsbury Town in September 2025, making 15 appearances across competitions without starting any matches. The club confirmed his departure from playing duties by mutual consent in January.
According to reports, Aneke hopes to explore opportunities in scouting and television analysis, potentially beginning a new professional chapter after retiring from football at the age of 33.
