John Obi Mikel fears Chelsea star could leave because of Xabi Alonso

John Obi Mikel has urged Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso to give Estevao more playing time, warning that the young Brazilian could consider leaving Stamford Bridge if his situation does not improve.

According to a report by Metro on Monday, 26 October 2026, the former Chelsea midfielder believes the club must find a way to increase Estevao’s involvement after the forward struggled to secure regular starts under Alonso this season.

Estevao enjoyed an impressive debut campaign following his arrival from Palmeiras in the summer of 2025, recording eight goals and four assists before a serious hamstring injury ended his season prematurely in April.

However, the 19-year-old has found opportunities limited since Alonso took charge, with his only two starts this season coming in the Carabao Cup.

The competition for places has intensified following Morgan Rogers’ impressive performances alongside Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro in Chelsea’s attack.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel acknowledged the challenge facing the teenager but insisted that his quality deserved greater recognition.

“When you have a player who is so good, a brilliant player who has so much talent and ability, it’s hard to see him not getting playing time. He’s not getting much playing time at all,” he said.

Mikel advised Alonso to rotate his attacking options and introduce Estevao more regularly from the bench rather than immediately making him a starter.

“Okay, maybe don’t start him in games. But bring him on in the second half because he is a brilliant, brilliant player with so much potential, so much ability, so much quality,” the former Nigeria international added.

Reports from Spain have linked Estevao with frustration over his limited involvement, while Barcelona have reportedly shown interest in signing the winger. However, there is no confirmation that he intends to leave Chelsea.

Mikel warned that the club must act to prevent the situation from escalating. “We have a young player, the last thing we want to see him do is to leave the football club,” he said.

He also stressed that regular opportunities in the Premier League and Champions League would be important for the youngster’s development.

Chelsea will face Liverpool away in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before returning to Premier League action against Manchester United.

The fixtures could provide Alonso with opportunities to manage his attacking options and give Estevao valuable minutes.
