Nigeria's Quarter-Final Opponent Confirmed After Germany's Shock Defeat

According to a report by Premium Times on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, will face Venezuela in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup after both teams secured their places in the last eight of the tournament in Morocco.

Nigeria booked their quarter-final ticket with a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16, while Venezuela produced one of the biggest surprises of the knockout stage by defeating Germany 1-0 on Wednesday, October 28. The results have set up an important encounter between two teams hoping to continue their journey towards the tournament's final.

The Flamingos showed determination against Mexico, with Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan scoring the goals that helped Nigeria advance. Umejiaku broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, giving the Nigerian side a valuable advantage before the interval.

Nigeria continued to push forward after the restart and eventually doubled their lead through Dunstan in the 71st minute. The second goal appeared to put the Flamingos in a comfortable position, but Mexico refused to surrender and scored through Emily Delgado deep into stoppage time.

Despite the late pressure, Nigeria held on to secure the victory and confirm their place in the quarter-finals. The result was an important achievement for the young Nigerian players, who will now need to maintain their concentration as the competition enters a more demanding stage.

Venezuela, however, will present a different challenge for the Flamingos. Their 1-0 victory over Germany demonstrated their ability to compete against strong opposition, with Diana Bravo scoring the decisive goal in the fifth minute of their Round of 16 encounter.

Germany attempted to recover from the early setback but struggled to find an equaliser as Venezuela defended their advantage. The South American side maintained its organisation until the final whistle, eliminating Germany and securing a place in the quarter-finals.

Venezuela's victory is particularly significant because Germany entered the encounter with a strong reputation in women's youth football. Their elimination means Nigeria must prepare for an opponent that has already demonstrated its ability to upset a highly rated team.

The quarter-final clash is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, 2026, at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé, Morocco. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Nigerian time, with the winner progressing to the semi-finals of the competition.

For Nigeria, the upcoming encounter represents an opportunity to move closer to another appearance in the latter stages of the tournament. The Flamingos won the bronze medal at the 2022 edition in India, and they will be eager to build on that achievement by reaching the semi-finals in Morocco.

Head coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew will have to study Venezuela's performance against Germany before deciding on the best approach for the match. Nigeria's attacking players have demonstrated their ability to score important goals, but the team must also improve its defensive concentration after conceding late against Mexico.

Umejiaku and Dunstan will be expected to play important roles again, while the entire team must remain disciplined against a Venezuelan side that will arrive with confidence after eliminating Germany.

Although Nigeria will be encouraged by their victory over Mexico, the Flamingos cannot afford to underestimate their next opponents. Venezuela have already proved that they can produce impressive results under pressure, making the quarter-final an important test of Nigeria's ambition and quality.

A victory on Sunday would take the Flamingos into the semi-finals and strengthen their hopes of challenging for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup title. With a place in the last four at stake, Nigeria must deliver another determined performance to keep their championship dream alive.
