Chelsea Learn Emi Martinez’s Expected Absence After Jaw Surgery As Return Timeline Emerges

Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez is reportedly facing around 40 days on the sidelines after undergoing surgery for a jaw fracture sustained during the club's 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Sunday, 18 October 2026, the Argentine international could miss several Chelsea fixtures and Argentina's upcoming international matches, with his potential return date falling in early December.

Martinez suffered the injury during a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The incident occurred in the second half, forcing the goalkeeper to receive lengthy treatment before being stretchered off and taken to hospital.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed after the match that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium for precautionary medical examinations.

Argentine journalist CL Merlo subsequently reported that the goalkeeper had undergone surgery on Saturday evening and could be unavailable for at least 40 days.

“Dibu Martínez is being operated on RIGHT NOW for a jaw fracture and will be out for Chelsea and the Argentina national team for at least 40 days,” Merlo reported.

If that recovery timeline is accurate, Martinez could miss Chelsea's upcoming fixtures against Liverpool, Manchester United and Sunderland, as well as their later matches against Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.

The injury could also rule him out of Argentina's two scheduled matches against Uruguay and Costa Rica during the November international break.

Chelsea's next scheduled Premier League fixture after the Forest game is against Crystal Palace on 2 December, potentially giving Martinez an opportunity to return if his recovery progresses as expected.

However, his actual return date will depend on his recovery and medical assessments following the reported operation.

The injury represents a setback for Alonso, particularly after Martinez and Mike Penders helped Chelsea secure their first Premier League clean sheet in 23 matches during the victory over Everton.

Penders replaced Martinez during the game and could now receive an extended run in the first team while the Argentine recovers.

Chelsea will also be without captain Reece James, who recently underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss several months.
