Barcelona Open Contract Talks With Young Midfielder Despite Limited Opportunities Under Hansi Flick

According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday October 22, 2026, even though young midfielder Brian Farinas has not played a competitive game for Barcelona this season, reports indicate that the club has begun contract extension and improvement talks.

Catalunya Radio reports that the Spanish champions are discussing the possibility of extending his current contract by another year or two, which would keep him with the club until either 2029 or 2030.

Barcelona wants to secure the future of the promising midfielder in the face of increasing competition for spots, and the deal they're proposing could include higher release clauses and improved wages.

The Catalan club is eager to lock in Farinas for the long haul before his current deal expires in the summer of 2028 because his current deal isn't up until then.

Flick and the coaching staff were impressed by the midfielder's versatility and performances during pre-season, which led to his promotion to Barcelona's senior squad.

This season, the 20-year-old was formally promoted to the first team and given the prestigious number four shirt. He joined Barcelona's youth academy in 2018 after moving from Villarreal.

While Frenkie de Jong was out with an injury in preseason, Farinas showed signs that could cement his place in Barcelona's midfield plans for the future.

The youngster was promoted to the first team, but he hasn't had much of a chance to prove himself in Flick's senior squad due to the fierce competition for playing time in Barcelona's midfield.

Continuing to sit on the bench without consistent first-team opportunities could make his situation more pressing during the January transfer window, according to the report.

The midfielder's desire for regular playing time may impact talks regarding his immediate future, though it doesn't necessarily imply Barcelona plans to sell him.

Now Barcelona has to find a way to keep a talented academy graduate while also giving him a realistic chance to play for the first team and continue to grow as a player.

While a better deal would be great for the club, Farinas will want more playing time and more chances to prove himself to Flick before the end of the season.
