According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Liverpool strengthened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought victory over Villarreal, coming from behind to secure a 4-2 win at Anfield and maintain their perfect record in the league phase.
The result gave the Reds their third consecutive victory in the competition, taking their points tally to nine from a possible nine and boosting their chances of qualifying directly for the round of 16.
Liverpool endured a difficult opening as Villarreal capitalised on defensive errors to establish an early advantage. Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the fourth minute, putting the visitors ahead and forcing the home side to respond.
Villarreal doubled their lead in the 29th minute through Sergi Cardona, leaving Liverpool with a significant challenge to overcome. However, the Reds gradually found their rhythm and began creating more opportunities in the attacking third.
Alexis Mac Allister reduced the deficit in the 36th minute with a header from Konstantinos Tsimikas’ corner. Liverpool then equalised in first-half stoppage time when Ronald Araujo connected with an excellent cross from Rio Ngumoha, sending his header inside the right post to make it 2-2.
The hosts returned for the second half with renewed determination and completed their comeback in the 65th minute. Mac Allister scored his second goal of the evening after another dangerous contribution from Ngumoha, putting Liverpool ahead for the first time.
Florian Wirtz extended the advantage just three minutes later, finishing confidently after receiving a clever pass from Cody Gakpo. The goal gave Liverpool a two-goal cushion and strengthened their grip on the encounter.
Despite late pressure from Villarreal, Liverpool held on to secure a crucial victory. The result further strengthened their position in the league phase and continued their impressive run in European competition.
Liverpool’s Champions League position
The victory took Liverpool to nine points after three matches, following their earlier wins against Atletico Madrid and LASK. According to the figures provided in the report, the Reds had scored 12 goals and conceded six across those opening fixtures.
Before Tuesday’s games, Liverpool were fifth in the standings with six points, behind Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Aston Villa and Stuttgart. Their victory over Villarreal improved their points tally, although their final position depended on the outcomes of other Matchday 3 fixtures and the relevant tiebreakers.
Villarreal, meanwhile, remained on three points from their opening three matches. The Spanish side had previously beaten Napoli 3-1 after losing their opening fixture against Borussia Dortmund.
Under the Champions League’s league-phase format, the eight highest-ranked teams qualify automatically for the round of 16. Clubs finishing between ninth and 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs, while teams placed 25th or below are eliminated.
Liverpool will now aim to maintain their winning momentum when they face Fenerbahce in their next Champions League fixture on November 4. Their comeback against Villarreal has strengthened their qualification prospects, but further positive results will be necessary to secure a place among the competition’s leading teams.
