Steven Gerrard Speaks on Trent Arnold's Potential Return: ‘I’m unsure if it’s right for Liverpool

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has expressed his willingness to welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold back to Anfield, although he remains uncertain whether bringing the defender back would be the right decision for the club.

The former Liverpool captain believes Alexander-Arnold possesses the quality and experience needed to improve the current squad. However, he also recognises that the circumstances surrounding the player's departure could make a possible reunion difficult, particularly considering the disappointment among supporters when he left.

Alexander-Arnold departed Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2025 after spending his entire professional career at Anfield. Despite arriving in Spain with high expectations, the England international has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. His limited involvement has now fuelled speculation that Liverpool could explore a loan deal for him during the January transfer window.

Speaking on The Overlap, Gerrard was asked whether Liverpool should consider bringing their former academy graduate back to the club. He indicated that he would welcome the opportunity based on the defender's footballing ability, insisting that his talent could still make a significant difference to the team.

However, Gerrard also acknowledged that the situation involves more than simply assessing the player's quality. He questioned whether a return would be beneficial for Liverpool, the manager and the supporters, given the circumstances surrounding his exit.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold's difficulties at Real Madrid have increased questions about his long-term future. The Spanish giants have strengthened their right-back options, with Netherlands international Denzel Dumfries also competing for a place in the starting lineup.

Interestingly, neither defender has managed to establish himself as the undisputed first choice. Federico Valverde has instead been deployed in the right-back position in recent matches, while reports suggest Dumfries currently has an advantage over Alexander-Arnold in the selection order.

Nevertheless, Liverpool's potential interest in their former player could face considerable obstacles. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly unwilling to approve departures during the middle of the season, making a January loan arrangement difficult.

Consequently, Liverpool may have to wait for Madrid to reconsider its position before pursuing the deal. Although Gerrard believes Alexander-Arnold has the ability to strengthen the squad, whether the club should bring him back remains a separate question.
