Danny Welbeck Explains His Important Role in Chelsea’s Dressing Room

According to a report by Football London on Wednesday October 21, 2026, during the summer transfer window, many Premier League supporters were taken aback by Danny Welbeck's move from Brighton to Chelsea. After becoming a fan favorite at Brighton last season, the seasoned striker scored 13 league goals.

Nobody saw the 35-year-old leaving the south coast, much less signing with one of the biggest clubs in England, coming. Some say that Welbeck was seen by Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso as a seasoned substitute striker who could help mentor the younger players in the squad.

Welbeck, along with Emiliano Martinez and Jordan Henderson, has contributed to Chelsea's average squad age increasing. As the Blues look to cultivate young talent and achieve more consistency, their experience is seen as valuable.

Now that he's discussed his duties off the field, the former England international has detailed how he helps out teammates who are looking for advice. Welbeck is more of a servant leader than an outspoken leader; he likes to show others the way and be approachable.

In the relatively youthful Chelsea locker room, Welbeck's age and experience naturally put him in a position of leadership, which he duly acknowledged. He thinks that his teammates can benefit from hearing about his career lessons.

Welbeck said, "I've been through a lot of experiences, the good and the bad," as he discussed his duties at Chelsea.

He continued by saying that he often gets questions from younger players, which gives him a chance to give them advice. As far as the striker is concerned, helping others should come naturally, rather than him trying to force himself into a leadership position.

It's a role that he's "embracing," Welbeck stated. "It's only normal. I simply enjoy assisting others.

Even though Welbeck's experience was the main reason Chelsea signed him, his on-field performance is still crucial. The forward's steady offensive play has kept him in demand since his days with Manchester United and Arsenal.

In five substitute appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League, he has failed to find the back of the net. But his goal-scoring prowess and potential worth to Alonso's team were on full display in the EFL Cup.

In only 163 minutes of EFL Cup action, Welbeck has scored three goals, including a brace in the second half against Leeds United in the third round. He has proven time and again that he is valuable in more ways than just guiding younger teammates.

Chelsea is juggling the needs of competing for trophies with those of developing promising young players, so Welbeck's experience may become more valuable. Throughout the season, Alonso has access to valuable options thanks to his leadership and finishing ability.
