Jose Mourinho reveals the '80-20' management secret he uses to handle Vinicius Junior

According to a report published by GOAL on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has discussed his approach to managing Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, explaining that he balances patience with firmness when dealing with the attacker.

Mourinho spoke publicly to journalists after Real Madrid’s 3-2 Champions League victory over AEK Athens on Wednesday night. Asked whether he preferred a gentle or strict approach with Vinicius, the Portuguese coach explained that his management style involved a combination of both.

He indicated that patience remained his preferred method, although he was prepared to be more demanding when circumstances required it. Mourinho described the balance as 80 per cent gentle treatment and 20 per cent firmness, offering an insight into how he handles one of the club’s leading attacking players.

The manager evaluated Vinicius’ contribution against AEK Athens. He considered the Brazilian’s performance acceptable, while acknowledging that it was not an outstanding display. Mourinho defended the forward by noting that Real Madrid as a whole had struggled during the encounter.

In his assessment, Vinicius performed in line with the team’s overall level and still made contributions despite the difficulties experienced by the Spanish side.

Mourinho responded to questions about the attacking options involving Yan Diomande. He explained that Diomande had been brought to Madrid because he could play on either flank, giving the team flexibility rather than limiting him to a single position.

The coach rejected the suggestion that Vinicius was causing difficulties because of Diomande’s role. He stressed that the two attackers possess different qualities and can provide alternative options depending on the team’s needs.

He further explained that his substitutions against AEK Athens were influenced partly by preparations for the next league fixture. Mourinho said taking Diomande off instead of Vinicius, and replacing Bernardo Silva with Eduardo Camavinga, reflected considerations about the upcoming match.

Real Madrid will next face Valencia at the Mestalla on Saturday in La Liga. The team will be seeking another positive result as it continues its campaign, while Mourinho’s comments have provided further insight into his plans for managing the squad’s attacking players.
