Michael Carrick names three things Manchester United must do to win games

According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Friday October 23, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has identified humility, sacrifice and hard work as the three key qualities his players must demonstrate to improve their results.

Carrick made the comments during a press conference on Friday following United's disappointing 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, which increased the pressure on the team.

The United boss acknowledged the club's poor form and insisted that his players must take responsibility as they attempt to turn their season around.

According to Carrick, the squad must rediscover the mentality that previously helped them produce a strong run of performances. "It's vital that they do," he said of players understanding the need to show humility, sacrifice, and hard work. "They have to, they have to. That's what I'm saying. We have done it, and we've shown a spell in it."

He stressed that winning football matches requires players to work harder than their opponents and earn the right to succeed.

Carrick also highlighted the importance of unity and togetherness, insisting that the team must remain united despite the difficulties it is facing.

The manager admitted that he understands what Manchester United need to do to start winning consistently and is focused on finding solutions to their current problems.

He further emphasised that the club's principles and values remain important, regardless of the results.

United will now turn their attention to Sunday's Premier League clash against Bournemouth, hoping to respond positively after their heavy European defeat.

With pressure mounting on Carrick, a strong performance and a positive result could provide a much-needed boost for the team.

The United manager will be eager to see his players put his message into practice as they seek to end their disappointing run and restore confidence at Old Trafford.
