Bukayo Saka injury opens door for Arsenal summer signing to make debut after Mikel Arteta update

According to a report by Evening Standard on Friday October 23, 2026, Arsenal summer signing James Scanlon could be handed an opportunity to make his senior debut after Bukayo Saka suffered an injury ahead of the Gunners’ Premier League clash against Everton.

Saka was forced off after just 10 minutes during Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night after experiencing pain in his left leg.

The England international went down without significant contact from an opponent and immediately signalled to the bench to be substituted, raising concerns over his fitness.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta subsequently confirmed that the winger had suffered a quadriceps problem, with a scan scheduled to determine the severity of the injury.

“We lost Bukayo, who actually was having a great game,” Arteta said. “They are a bit concerned. A player that has to come off with a really sharp pain is never good news, but we have to wait and see.”

Saka’s potential absence could force Arteta to make changes to his attacking options when Arsenal host Everton on Saturday.

Noni Madueke is expected to be a leading candidate to start on the right wing after replacing Saka against Bayern, while Eberechi Eze could feature on the opposite flank following his improved performance.

However, with Christos Tzolis also reportedly doubtful due to a hamstring problem, Arsenal could have an opportunity to include another attacking player in their matchday squad.

That situation could open the door for Scanlon, who joined Arsenal from Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old has trained with Arteta’s first team on several occasions this season and has impressed with his performances for the club’s Under-21 side.

Scanlon has scored three goals in four Premier League 2 appearances, strengthening his case for consideration by the senior coaching staff.

The Gibraltar international has also earned 28 senior caps for his country, although he is yet to make his first-team debut for Arsenal.

Unlike in the Champions League, where he is ineligible because he was not included on the club’s A List and does not qualify for the B List, Scanlon is eligible to feature in the Premier League.

His potential involvement will depend on Arteta’s final selection decisions, particularly with Arsenal’s Under-21 team also scheduled to play on Saturday.

Speaking after joining the Gunners, Scanlon expressed his excitement about the opportunity to develop at the club.

“I like to score goals, assist, so hopefully I can excite players who watch me,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing, representing the badge, improving and hopefully showing people what I can do.”

With Saka’s fitness still a concern, Scanlon could be in contention for a place in Arsenal’s senior squad as Arteta prepares his team for the visit of Everton. However, his inclusion and a potential debut have not yet been confirmed.
