Former Arsenal Star Says He Left Because The Football was Joyless Under Mikel Arteta

Former Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has revealed that limited playing opportunities under Mikel Arteta affected his happiness at the Emirates Stadium and played a major role in his decision to leave the club.

According to a report by the London Evening Standard on Saturday, October 24, 2026, the Italian international wanted a more prominent role in his team, believing that regular appearances were essential to maintaining his motivation and enjoyment of football.

Jorginho arrived at Arsenal from Chelsea in 2023 and spent two and a half seasons with the Gunners. He made 79 appearances during that period, starting 46 matches, and was part of the squads that finished second in the Premier League in 2024 and 2025.

He eventually left north London on a free transfer at the end of the 2024-25 season before signing for Brazilian side Flamengo. His move has proved successful, with the midfielder winning five trophies, including the 2025 Copa Libertadores.

In an interview with The Times in 2026, Jorginho explained that his decision to move on was driven by his desire for greater involvement rather than any disagreement with Arteta.

“I want to feel alive and important for the team,” he said, acknowledging that staying motivated became difficult when he was not featuring regularly.

The midfielder also discussed Arsenal’s increasing reliance on set pieces under Arteta. Although he recognised the importance of dead-ball situations in helping teams secure results, he warned that they should not become more important than the creative side of the game.

Jorginho compared set-piece preparation to completing homework ahead of an examination, suggesting that proper preparation can help teams perform well and deliver the results supporters expect.

However, he believes managers must maintain a balance between tactical organisation and entertaining football. He cautioned that an excessive focus on set pieces could take away from the creativity and beauty that make the sport appealing.

Before joining Arsenal, Jorginho enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea, making 213 appearances and scoring 29 goals. He won four major trophies with the Blues, including the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League.

Despite being born in Brazil, he represented Italy internationally and played an important role in the country’s Euro 2020 triumph. His performances during that period also helped him finish third in the 2021 Ballon d’Or rankings.

His latest remarks highlight how important regular playing time can be to a footballer’s confidence and satisfaction, particularly during the later stages of a professional career.
