Chelsea directors deserve huge credit for refusing to sell Xabi Alonso favourite fans wanted gone

Chelsea’s decision to retain Pedro Neto is proving to be a smart move, with the winger emerging as a key figure under manager Xabi Alonso after previously facing doubts over his future at Stamford Bridge.

According to a report published by The Athletic on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the club’s sporting directors deserve credit for resisting the temptation to sell the Portugal international during the summer transfer window, as he has rediscovered his best form under Alonso.

Chelsea signed Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £54 million three years ago, following his impressive performances as a Premier League winger.

The Portuguese international enjoyed early success at Stamford Bridge, helping the Blues secure both the Conference League and the Club World Cup. However, his performances became less convincing last season, when he struggled to deliver consistently.

His disappointing goal and assist record left supporters frustrated, while his dismissal during Chelsea’s match against Arsenal in March further intensified criticism of his performances.

Chelsea were losing 2-1 when Neto was shown a red card for bringing down Gabriel Martinelli. Having already received a yellow card, he was booked for a second time within three minutes and forced his team to continue with ten players.

The sending-off angered travelling supporters, with some questioning whether the winger had a future at the club.

Several Premier League rivals subsequently expressed interest in signing Neto, with Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham among the clubs linked with the player. Reports also suggested that a move to Manchester City could have reunited him with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.

Despite the growing interest, Chelsea reportedly set an asking price of £100 million for the winger. The valuation made a transfer difficult to complete and ultimately kept Neto in the squad for the 2026/27 campaign.

Chelsea have since benefited from that decision, as the 26-year-old has established himself as a valuable player in Alonso’s tactical setup.

His versatility has been particularly useful, allowing him to feature in both wide attacking positions and at wing-back. He has shown that he can provide an attacking threat without neglecting his defensive duties.

Neto has also made considerable progress in front of goal. After scoring five times in 34 Premier League appearances last season, he has already recorded three goals in seven league outings this term.

His latest display came against Everton, where he scored a decisive brace to deliver a 2-0 victory and reinforce his claims for a regular starting position under Alonso.

The winger’s improved form has further strengthened Chelsea’s faith in him, earning him a new contract that extends until 2032.

Meanwhile, sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Joe Shields and Sam Jewell have come under scrutiny for their recruitment decisions since BlueCo took control of the club. However, their determination to keep Neto despite the pressure surrounding his future has turned out to be a decision deserving of considerable credit.
