According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly decided to end his international career without first discussing the matter with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.
Reports from Portuguese newspaper A Bola indicate that the relationship between the 41-year-old forward and the national team manager has deteriorated, with both men reportedly not having any conversation since September 30.
Ronaldo is said to have communicated his decision to retire from international football directly to the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença. However, he allegedly did not contact Jesus before making the announcement.
Further information suggests that the Al-Nassr captain is no longer interested in representing Portugal under the leadership of the current manager. This has reportedly been identified as the major reason behind his unexpected decision to bring his international career to an end.
The timing of Ronaldo's announcement has also attracted attention, as it came shortly before Portugal was expected to release its squad for the November international fixtures.
According to the report, Ronaldo wanted to avoid receiving a national team invitation from Jesus, who had already planned to include the experienced striker in his squad for the upcoming matches.
The Portuguese manager was therefore reportedly taken by surprise when news of Ronaldo's retirement emerged, especially considering that he had intended to continue relying on the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star.
Ronaldo's decision has now raised questions about his relationship with the national team leadership and the circumstances surrounding his departure from international football.
