According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez suffered a serious-looking head injury during his side's Premier League clash against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, forcing him to leave the pitch on a stretcher.
The incident happened in the 75th minute when Martinez and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite collided while challenging for the ball. Both players went down after the clash, raising concerns among their teammates and the supporters inside the stadium.
Medical staff quickly entered the pitch to attend to the two players, but Martinez required more attention as the game was stopped for about 10 minutes to allow him to receive treatment. The Chelsea goalkeeper was eventually carried off on a stretcher, with the worrying incident taking attention away from what had been an important afternoon for Xabi Alonso's team.
Although the 34-year-old was able to move his arms while being taken off the pitch, the full extent of his injury was not immediately clear. Chelsea supporters will now be hoping that the Argentine goalkeeper has not suffered a serious injury, especially with important Premier League matches ahead.
Branthwaite, on the other hand, was able to continue playing after receiving treatment from Everton's medical team, although the collision was a worrying moment for both clubs.
Martinez was replaced by Mike Penders, who came on to take his place between the posts for the closing stages of the encounter. Chelsea had to remain focused after the lengthy stoppage as they looked to protect their advantage and secure the victory away from home.
Despite the frightening incident, Chelsea went on to claim a 2-0 win over Everton, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals to give Alonso's side all three points. However, Martinez's condition will be a major concern for the club, with further updates needed to determine how serious the goalkeeper's injury is.
