New Super Eagles Striker Makes First Statement After Helping Club End Losing Run

According to a report by Punch on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Nigerian-born striker George Ilenikhena has reacted after inspiring Al-Ittihad to a convincing 4-1 victory over Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League. The forward scored a goal and provided an assist as his team returned to winning ways after suffering two successive defeats.

Ilenikhena was one of the standout performers during the encounter, earning the Man of the Match award for his impressive contribution. His performance helped Al-Ittihad secure all three points and restore some confidence following their disappointing results in previous matches.

Speaking to journalists in Saudi Arabia after the game, the striker emphasised the importance of responding positively to their recent setbacks. He explained that the players were determined to end their losing streak and expressed happiness with the team's performance against Al-Ettifaq.

The Nigerian attacker noted that winning was particularly important after consecutive defeats, adding that the team had successfully responded to the challenge. He was pleased that their efforts produced the desired result and helped them return to the right track.

The former Monaco forward had missed Al-Ittihad's 3-2 loss to Al-Hilal on October 10 due to fitness concerns. Although he subsequently recovered from a minor injury and returned to the squad, he was unable to prevent another defeat as his side lost 2-1 to Shabab Al-Ahli.

However, the meeting with Al-Ettifaq offered Ilenikhena an opportunity to make a significant impact and help his team end their disappointing run. He took advantage of the occasion by contributing directly to two goals, playing an important role in Al-Ittihad's comfortable victory.

The 20-year-old remained on the pitch for 73 minutes before the coaching staff replaced him with Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri. The substitute made an immediate impact in the closing stages, scoring twice to extend Al-Ittihad's advantage and seal the emphatic 4-1 result.

Reacting to his substitution, Ilenikhena explained that the most important thing was the team's success rather than individual playing time. He stressed that every member of the squad had a responsibility to contribute whenever given an opportunity, regardless of the coach's decisions.

The striker's comments reflected his willingness to prioritise collective achievement over personal interests, particularly as Al-Ittihad look to improve their results and remain competitive in the Saudi Pro League.

Meanwhile, Ilenikhena's recent performances have demonstrated his growing importance to the team's attacking setup. According to the report, the Nigerian forward has now recorded at least one goal or assist in each of his last four Saudi Pro League appearances.

His consistent contributions in front of goal will be encouraging for Al-Ittihad as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures. Following their victory over Al-Ettifaq, the club will hope the striker maintains his impressive form and continues to provide the goals and creativity needed to secure more positive results.

For Ilenikhena, the performance also represents another opportunity to strengthen his reputation as a promising Nigerian attacking talent, with his latest display offering encouragement to supporters who will be monitoring his progress ahead of future Super Eagles opportunities.
