Chelsea injury update on Joao Pedro, Emi Martinez and Pep Chavarria

According to a report by the Evening Standard on Monday, October 26, 2026, Chelsea are dealing with multiple injury concerns ahead of their Carabao Cup showdown with Liverpool. Joao Pedro, Emi Martinez and Pep Chavarria are among the players whose fitness is being closely monitored by manager Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea head into the midweek fixture following a disappointing 2-0 loss to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Their injury situation has added to Alonso's difficulties as the Blues prepare for a hectic schedule that also includes a Premier League encounter with Manchester United.

Joao Pedro missed the Tottenham game unexpectedly after suffering an injury during training at Cobham. According to Alonso, fluid had built up around the affected area, preventing the medical team from immediately determining the extent of the Brazilian striker's injury.

The club are conducting further medical assessments to establish the seriousness of the problem and estimate how long Pedro could be out of action. His return date has yet to be confirmed, leaving his availability for Wednesday's trip to Liverpool in doubt.

Martinez is another major concern for Chelsea, with the goalkeeper expected to be unavailable for several weeks after sustaining a fractured jaw in the 2-0 win over Everton. The Argentine suffered the injury in an accidental collision before undergoing surgery.

Alonso has provided a positive update on Martinez's recovery, confirming that the goalkeeper is doing well. Nevertheless, the Chelsea manager insisted that the club would rely on medical guidance before making a decision about his return to competitive action.

Martinez is reportedly expected to remain sidelined until approximately mid-November. As a result, Mike Penders is likely to continue as Chelsea's goalkeeper while the Argentine recovers.

There is, however, some encouraging news concerning Pep Chavarria, who is making progress after picking up a knock during training.

The defender was unavailable for Chelsea's recent matches against Everton and Tottenham but has now resumed partial training with the first team.

Alonso had previously revealed that Chavarria was gradually increasing the intensity of his training sessions. This development has raised the possibility of the defender returning for the Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool on October 28 or the Premier League clash with Manchester United on October 31.

Despite the progress, Chelsea will need to assess his response to training before determining whether he is ready to feature in either fixture.

The Blues will be hoping to recover some of their injured players as they look to put the Tottenham defeat behind them and advance to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Pedro's uncertain fitness is particularly worrying given his importance to the attack, while Martinez's injury has left Chelsea without their first-choice goalkeeper. Chavarria's potential return would provide Alonso with additional defensive cover as the club prepares for a challenging run of matches.
