According to a report by Football London on Sunday October 18, 2026, Arsenal secured an impressive 3-0 Champions League victory over Lille, but manager Mikel Arteta revealed that one player remained disappointed despite the team’s excellent result.
The Gunners dominated much of the opening half but struggled to break through Lille’s organised defence. Their frustration grew until Jurrien Timber produced a brilliant goal to give Arsenal the breakthrough.
Following Timber’s opener, Arteta introduced Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard through a triple substitution. The changes transformed Arsenal’s attack, with the three players contributing significantly as the hosts scored twice more.
Although Arsenal celebrated a convincing victory, Havertz reportedly left the pitch disappointed because he failed to score himself. Nevertheless, the German international provided an assist for Saka’s goal, helping his team complete the comfortable win.
Arteta explained Havertz’s reaction, saying, “He’s so competitive, Kai.” The manager praised his immediate influence after coming on, adding that the forward was unhappy about missing the opportunity to score.
“He was happy to help the team, but he was so upset,” Arteta continued. He described this attitude as exactly what Arsenal want from their players, highlighting Havertz’s determination to improve and develop consistently.
The Arsenal manager also praised Havertz’s exceptional understanding of the game, suggesting that his football intelligence could be the best within the squad.
Arteta stated, “His football IQ, it’s something else.” He explained that Havertz processes information quickly and understands tactical situations exceptionally well, qualities he considers particularly valuable in a striker.
Havertz has enjoyed an encouraging start to the season after missing significant time last campaign through injuries. He has already registered three goals and two assists, demonstrating his growing importance to Arsenal’s attacking setup.
Arteta’s continued confidence in Havertz reflects the German’s influence and potential. The manager has even backed him to score 25 goals in a season, underlining his belief in the forward’s ability.
With his intelligence, competitiveness and contribution to the team, Havertz continues to strengthen his position in Arsenal’s attacking plans, potentially remaining ahead of Viktor Gyokeres in the club’s selection hierarchy.
